From experience, many with certificates are mediocres. Some self-taught are way better.

Either way, we only consider being able to code, not being certified.

Ok. The point is people shouldn't apply because they are certified. They should apply because they can code.

I'm curious. When you say certificate, which certificate exactly are you referring to? A university degree or a piece of paper certifying you completed the course work of one programming class?

A lot of what is obtained in the industry is a completely new world of computer science been taught in school. Don't get me wrong, I'm not undervaluing general knowledge taught in school. But very few of that knowledge will find direct application in the Real World.

Hence, for most cases, the employer sees no "true" difference between a competent developer with a degree or certificate and a competent developer without one.

Besides, the in a field like technology, this sort of knowledge is available to just about anyone looking to learn it.

Industries do send complex programming projects to Universities worth millions to help come up with a solution, so the truth is that industries are the ones utilising the researches done by computer scientist at universities

A good degree certificate with a little bit of experience allows a developer to research and implement an application that does what the users want. Coders without a university degree have limited knowledge in how to develop applications.

Corona sdk developers are well welcome.

Don't mind the name for those not familiar with this sdk, it won't give you the virus, it will only get the work done faster.

What? Industries asking for help from universities to develop algorithms to solve problems? That's the first time I'm hearing that or anything remotely close to it.

Is it the university professors or the students? Look, a field like technology? No university will be able to keep up with the pace at which the software industry advances. No university. Hence, it's illogical to assume university professors can keep up to date with happenings in the industry to the extent of solving complex problems the industry is facing coupled with their educational duties in acedemics.

I'd give you an example, most of the computer algorithms they teach in computer science classes relating to optimizing the performance of systems, is so out of date that now in actual work environment, optimizing an image you're loading will ACTUALLY improve performance 10 fold.

The drivers of the programming world is definitely not the acedemics, but the industry stakeholders themselves.

The people who are maintaining and improving the programming languages are industry stakeholders.

Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon, Apple Salesforce... These are the tech gaints who actually drive the industry. Do you know the amount of research that goes on in-house at all these companies? They build the tools and softwares and libraries and frameworks that the industry uses. Some of these guys NEVER went to school at all.

React, the JavaScript library, was built by Facebook. When they open source it, Dan Abramov made significant changes to their open source code. Facebook hired him to join the team building and maintaining the React project afterwards. whilst an employee of Facebook, he built REDUX, a state management library to work with REACT. IF you've use REDUX, you'll understand why it's so much regarded in the industry. Using it teaches fundamental programming concepts. It's one of the most thoughtful library to work with out there.

This Dan Abramov, he NEVER studied computer science. And all those algorithms you think is relevant here. Infact, he has a blog where he says a computer science degree is not a good Return on Investment ROI in the software industry, especially if you have to pay thousand dollars to acquire it.

Apart from the natural beliefs employers seem to have in school certificates, it gives almost no leverage in the ACTUAL JOB.

Heck, I'll always be productive than a freshman out of school in the industry because most of what he knows, we don't use. And when or if we do need them, he's forgotten most of it already.

You mentioned Microsoft here is a job advert at Microsoft for a Software Engineer. Well employers are free to decide whether they want programmers with certificate or without, but it is the customers that will decide whether they want a Software Application that does what they expect or not.
Software Engineer
A bachelor's or master's degree in engineering, computer science or related field 12 months of graduation or graduated within the last 12 months.
