Hmm... This is one strong and curious question o. Would really love to understand how it works... This imported system of governance over the indigenous system of government we practiced for centuries (monarchy).

Abeg.. Anyone with insightful knowledge on this should contribute to this area of curiosity o

Is totally impossible for Oba to be dethrone in Edo state , because in Edo Kingship is hereditary by birth, not choosing or appointed. In fact the governor or president have no role to play on it. Even if the governor decides otherwise and suspend the Oba, nobody in Edo will take the position and even if it means the Oba die on suspension, the next person to the throne must be the first son and if it happens he does not have son before his death it had to be his immediate younger brother. Nobody has the power to dethrone the Oba of Benin or any other king in Edo land.

Constitutionally, yes.

Now whether or not he will actually deign to try it is a different question.

The respect that the Edo people accord the institution of the Oba no be here; I don't think there is anything to compare with it in all of Nigeria; and as such any governor that tries to mess with it will meet with great resistance from the people. Benin City will not contain him and the Benin people.

In 1897, the British force, under the command of Admiral Sir Harry Rawson, exiled the then Oba Ovonramwen to Calabar, taking control of the area in order to establish the British colony of Nigeria. The expedition was mounted to avenge the defeat by the Binis of a British invasion force that had violated Benin territory earlier in 1896.

It consisted of both indigenous soldiers and British officers, and is still remembered by the Edos with horror today. Under the pretext of covering for the cost of the expedition, the Benin royal art was stolen and auctioned off by the British. Ovonramwen died in 1914, his throne never having been restored to him.

His son, grandson and now his great-grandson, however, all preserved their title and status as traditional rulers in modern-day Nigeria.
