Unless Nigerians go back to our individual strength, not only will the Country break as all regions now want, we may perish as untouchables all over the world.

Where is the hardwork Igbo was known for?

Where is the honesty Hausa was known for?

Where is the accommodation Yoruba was known for?

Let me start with Igbo because of the problems with Yoruba and Nigerians in general. Please note that my view may be clouded as a Lagosian but as Yoruba I speak for most Nigerians.

Contrary to what Igbo children of this generation tell us, Igbo have something over other Nigerians. It is the spirit to succeed but not by any means. If you do not succeed at home as Igboman, you go out and find success. Otherwise, you are nothing but Efulefu.

Igbo proverb say while old age is respected in Igboland, a young man is revered for hardwork.

Yoruba are not so desperate and Hausa take whatever comes and accept their status in life.

Not anymore for either Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa. Greed and fast money has taken over.

Yoruba children have rejected the accommodation of their parents and wondered aloud why they were so stupid.

In Lagos, we were thought that if a stranger entered Lagos in the morning, he must be fed, clothed and given a place to sleep before dusk. What changed?

Later ......

Most areas in the old Western Region from Ondo Province to Lagos Island whenever a Yoruba man need employees, they know Yoruba are complacent.

Hire an Igbo man, he would work for you as if he was running his own business. Hire an Hausa man, he would guide your interest like a jealous lover.

It is not that Yoruba did not do all those, they probably did outside Yoruba land like Googi that carried phone books and worked any hours including Christian and Muslim holidays overseas in those days.

For Nigeria, who born dog?

So Yoruba actually discriminated against Yoruba in jobs and when it came to renting their places.

What changed? Later ......

Before discussing the change, keep in mind that this was before oil income.

The Nigerian Youths were all United under Herbert Macauley fighting for Independence. A little disaffection started because Azikiwe supported Samuel Akinsanya as leader, Awolowo supported Earnest Ikoli an Ijaw as leader. Since then, Awo and Zik had their differences.

When Azikiwe succeeded Macauley as the Leader of Yoruba dominated NCNC, the Party won Lagos City Council.

Indeed, Yoruba sent Azikiwe to Ibadan as leader but fell far short of Action Group and other parties to form the Government in Ibadan under Awo.

It is very important to note that this tolerance and accommodation of others within Yoruba have never been repeated anywhere else throughout the Country up to the present Day.

If anything, the tolerance has been claimed as rights never afforded Yoruba anywhere in the Federal.

You can imagine what Country we would have been today if Yoruba accommodation were shared in the North and the East. Instead, it was ridiculed.

This is the basis of where the anger of Yoruba Youths comes from

Now, if you're talking about business creation and success, no ethnic group in the world after the shackles of slavery was defeated by Independence led in Africa by Nkrumah and put in process by Herbert Macauley in Nigeria, can compete with Yoruba.

Before Independence, there was only one University in Nigeria and a few Teachers training schools, most of which were located in the West where demand was overwhelming. It was not by accident that Ibadan, contrary to the false assumption of many people, became the major Educational, Industrial and Housing estates in Nigeria.

Sorry, Lagos was an extension of Western Region's growth. Unknown to many strangers in Lagos, they are living in what was Western Region.

The reason for Western growth is easy to understand unless you just want to be fictitious for the heck of it. Most of the first professionals and skilled men were Yoruba and were hungry for education to train their children. So the Christian and Muslim Missions had no choice but to meet their needs. It was not enough.

Nigerians started Government schools all over the Country led by the West.

My friends that was the attraction to the West, not Seaport not Oil money and not intolerance. Nigeria Youth Movement was formed by Herbert Macauley that has never got the honor and respect he deserves.

This man represented OLUWA the TIJANI family all the way to the highest Court in London, to rescue Lagos LAND from the British. If the British failed under domination, who can claim Lagos?

Even that little piece of Land called Oko Awori where peppers and live fish were traded by children of Ogunfunminire had few strangers except those from the West. Fortunately, some historians still keep the population document of little Oko Ata now called Eko or Lagos. It shows that apart from the founders, most of the migrants came from the West and some others from other parts.

The attraction was jobs, jobs, jobs. The employers were Yoruba business men and women employing anyone that wanted a job regardless of where they came from in Africa. Indeed, it has always been what is called melting pot until today.

Even today, they are still urging their children to Go West Young Man Go West!

It was never a right, it was tolerance and accommodation. There is a difference between business men or women and the petty traders that HELPED them extend their goods and services at retail levels.

These generosity, accommodation and tolerance can only be found in the West up to Today today!

Imagine if we have these in every part of the Country.

Things started going wrong in the West when Awolowo moved to Lagos thinking he could do for Nigeria what he did for the West.

The height of his success came when Action Group he led became the official Opposition in the North and the East by campaigning for Free Education and Free Healthcare.

However, Awo was not a politician. Politician do not tell you upfront why they want your votes. Chief S. L. A (Akintola) warned him where to pitch his tent. He insisted on working with Zik of Africa. After all, both of them understood the struggle for Independence under Herbert Macauley than anyone else.

The Election of 1959/60 for Independence could have kept Nigeria on course as a Regional Power with Azikiwe as Executive Prime Minister and then retained a clause to opt out of Nigeria if any Region so desired. Azikiwe rejected both from Awo. Rightly or wrongly today based on the fact that he did not want to isolate the North. They have been working with the North since. Akintola was right

Guess who do not want Yoruba to work with the North lately?

Nevertheless, the West remained the power House of the Country attractive to all Africans.

Some other Yoruba became suspicious like SLA. Whenever some of the people from the East were offered jobs and promoted based on MERIT by Yoruba employers or Oga, all their hires become Igbo.

Even recently, Yoruba landlords were renting to Igbo out of greed because they were willing to pay whatever was demanded for as long as five years!

However, it would be their last rent. So when Igbo tenants started complaining of discrimination in Lagos and some parts of the West, they were right!

Until Nigerians return to hard work, honesty, accommodation and tolerance throughout the Country, not only in the West; the Country will not only break, our next generation will perish!

If anything, the West stands a better. chance of going back to its Western Region days when meagre earnings from Cocoa and ingenuity created the First In Africa. There is no greater curse on Nigeria than Oil Money that destroyed the livelihood of farmers and fishermen.

Enough insults about Yoruba did or did not do this on their own LAND.

Lucidly said, the yoruba people are revered for their hospitality. @op you need to correct what you wrote about the higher institution before independence. Prior to independence, Nigeria had two universities namely Unibadan(founded in 1947) and University of Nigeria (founded in 1955).

Sir,

UNN was established as you tightly pointed out in 1955.

It did not OPEN until Azikiwe become the Governor General in 1960.

Please note that I did not mention St. Andrews College Oyo at the end of 1800 that OPENED early 1900. Some of the earliest students also came from the East.
