Coronavirus Update: Rivers State Government closes all borders
The State Government on Wednesday announced a move to check the spread of coronavirus to Rivers State. Which led to the announcement that air, sea and land routes into the state will be closed to traffic with effect from 6pm, Thursday, March 26, 2020
In a broadcast .
On Wednesday, Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike brought to the public that the strategic measure became necessary in respect of recent developments.

“I render all honour to God before I bring to your notice that our State would have been infected with coronavirus yesterday, but for the alertness of security agents, stopped the infected person from boarding a flight from Abuja to Port Harcourt.
“All security measures at the “Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja was bypassed by The infected person ” and planned to sneak into Port Harcourt before security agents stopped her from gaining entrance to the the state.

“As a result of the aforementioned, the State Security Council had a meeting yesterday and analysed strategic measures already to be put in place and concluded that there was urgent need to adopt strict measures to protect those living and doing business in the state from the deadly virus.
Consequently after that, the council took the following decisions;
– The Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa will be closed to air traffic. This will take effect from 6pm on Thursday, March 26, 2020.
We are positive that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and other federal agencies will work with us.

-No vehicle will be allowed to gain entrance to the state or leave the state also including; land and sea borders will be closed.
The Governor also added that the new measures will be put in place till further notice.
“ coronavirus has wrecked many countries, it is expedient to take dire measures ,and that the deadly virus has no respect for anyone”He added

The Governor later announced that ..
-After due consultations with Religious Leaders, All religious gathering were banned
-“All Public Burials and weddings were restricted, while public parks, night clubs and Cinemas were directed to close down.”
