The Federal Government on Thursday said unless those who had contact with confirmed cases of coronavirus came forward, in few days ahead, Nigeria would record a rapid increase in the number of cases.

The FG also said it was tracing 4,370 persons, who came into contact with people that were suffering from COVID-19.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, who disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja, said the country was on the verge of community transmission of the disease.

Mohammed said this just as coronavirus cases in the country increased to 65 on Thursday.

The minister said, “We have 4,370 people of interest whom we are tracing. We urge those who have had contact with suspected cases to immediately report to the authorities. We urge Nigerians to support the authorities in this regard.

“We are on the verge of reaching the level of community spread. We must stop this immediately or we will record exponential cases in the days ahead. There is no better way to say this.

“I don’t intend to sound apocalyptic. But the truth is that time is running out. If we don’t urgently and more aggressively enforce the measures I have just listed, we have a short window within which to stop this pandemic or face an explosion in terms of the cases. We cannot afford to be complacent.”

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control said as of 7:35pm on Thursday, 12 additional cases had been recorded in Lagos State, one in Bauchi State and one in the Federal Capital Territory.

The NCDC via its Twitter handle, said, “14 new cases of #COVID19 have been confirmed in Nigeria; one in Bauchi State, one in the FCT and 12 in Lagos. Of the 14, six were detected on a vessel, three are returning travellers into Nigeria and two are close contacts of confirmed cases. As of 7:35pm 26th March, there are 65 confirmed cases, three discharged and one dead.”

The NCDC had on Thursday said cases of the virus in the country increased to 51 from 46 on Wednesday.

Currently, the majority of cases were imported to the country from high-risk nations such as the United States, the United Kingdom and other European countries.

Among those who have tested positive are the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, and the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed.

The disease has spread to eight states and the Federal Capital Territory. There are 44 cases in Lagos; 12 in the Federal Capital Territory; Ogun State, three; Ekiti State, one; Bauchi State, two; Oyo State, one; Edo State, one; Osun State, one and Rivers State, one.

I will continue to blame the federal govt for any loss of lives occassioned by the corona-19 virus. The FG knew the "Nigerian lifestyle". The FG knew that most Nigerians don't adhere strictly to instructions no matter how important, the FG knew that contagious diseases travel faster in over-populated environments just like in Nigeria, the FG knew the high level of poverty in Nigeria and that many Nigerians cannot afford a total stay at home policy, that was why the FG shouldn't have allowed the disease through our ports whether by air, land or water. Anybody coming through the ports should have been tested at points of entries and any that tests positive, should have been sent directly to treatment centres instead of allowing them to go home. Tracing over 4000 people without adequate information about them is almost impossible.

How many people have those 4000 contacted? God will help us, hope we will not dwarf Italy and Iran.

I always thought Nigerian politicians were the worst people in Nigeria but Covid 19 has exposed Nigerian pastors. While politicians are soliciting for fund for Nigerians. CEOs and celebrities donating their hard earned money to fight Covid 19, these insensitive thieves are busy thinking of how to empty us at this critical time. Thunder dey leave better people to fire dey fire trees.

Nigeria can't handle malaria

Hunger is still killing Nigerians.

Only a cure to this Virus can save us.

If not, let's all brace up for the worst case of fatalities in Nigeria.

When you look at what other countries and their presidents are doing to curtail corona virus with hour by hour updates and live nationwide addresses about the measures they've taken to control the viral spread and the economic packages they have in place for their citizens to help with the lock down, you will shake your head for the God forsaken country called Nigeria. Instead of daily updates about corona situation and the economic palliatives they're puting in place to help families buy essential commodities like food stuffs to help enforce the no movement order, the impostor and tyrrant is completely missing in action (not like I expected him to act anyway, he's just a puppet).
Are Nigerian families going to eat sand in lockdown? Nigerians should demand for the immediate resignation or overthrow of this fulani regime. Apart from Ruga, terrorism and Fulanization, this bloody regime has absolutely NOTHING TO OFFER!

ONE NIGERIA IS DEAD!

That's why UN isn't impressed with our porous borders accommodating every tom dic n hary in subshahara africa. To compound it not good record system with population details like addresses, age, sex, nationality, and bios. We confuse unplanned urbanization for development.

Lol...the politicians know how undocumented population figure & details aid their evil plans so they may never do anything about record keeping. A nation with no good ID system for 60 years, it that one a nation?

How do we know the confirmed cases when you are hiding their identities?
This things would have been easy. List the names of those confirmed cases and see people avoid them. And people will also avoid those closer to them

I hope it doesn't get to that figure. Even 1000 cases will be overwhelming for Nigeria
