From journalist Somtoo Okoye on Facebook:
How come?
- Hazard allowance for a doctor in Nigeria is 5k.

- Newspaper allowance of a Nigerian senator (paid monthly) is close to 1m.

- If a doctor is treating a HIV or Coro patient and accidentally pinches himself with a needle used on the patient and dies of the disease, his family gets a one-time credit alert of 5,000 naira.

- Policemen working day and night to enrue peace during this Coronavirus pandemic, effecting state border closure and arresting infected people who refused to be quarantined, putting themselves at great risk of getting infected, get zero naira for extra work or risk allowance
- In this same period of Corobaby, our House of Reps are getting themselves 2020 Toyota Camry and Landcruiser Prado SUVs for doing nothing.

How come the people who should be earning much more are being paid in scraps while the people who do nothing all day receive the highest, blown-out-of-proportion pay?

According to Wikipedia, the average annual salary for a doctor is $146,222 in New York City, USA; Police officers earn an average yearly salary of $78,750 while Federal lawmakers (Senators and House Representatives) earn $174,000 annually.

Unfortunately in Nigeria, a doctor in a Federal Hospital gets about 400 to 600k monthly ($20,000 annually), an average Police inspector gets about 120k monthly (a measly $4,000 annually) while a senator, the defender of the universe and savior of the world gets 13.5m monthly ($450,000) for doing absolutly nothing.

A Nigerian senator's salary dwarfs the salary of a United States senator by more than 100%; How come a Nigerian policeman earns 195 times less than a policeman in the US?

How come?

If the Nigeria doctors and Nurses are smart, this is the right time for them to demand for reasonable allowance

But many of our doctors are mannerless and rude, they quickly give up on patients without even trying CPR, they don't deserve more

no.. we are smart and we know that this is not the right time to put pressure on the government and by extension causing deaths of millions at this perilous time. Unfortunately the only language the government understands is "strike" and this is not the time to do that.
We swore an "hippocratic oath" to be ethically impulsive.

If you the rest of the masses are smart you'd know that it's ur obligation to push the government to compensate the doctors and healthcare workers better. Because a doctor would go extra miles when he feels well compensated and happy.

Speaking as a doctor , you make a lot of sense, OP. And to be frank we do pay our senators too much

However

1. If we were to pay me $146,222 dollars a year....you would also have to pay high hospital bills. A Caesarean in the USA costs $50000 US.($27876 paid by your insurance) for example. A CS in Nigeria can cost as low as $10000...sometimes even much lower. A normal delivery in the US costs $30000.

2.If you were to pay a policeman in Nigeria $78,570....maybe you would have to pay far more in taxes . Tax rates in the US are anything between 10-37% for federal taxes. THEN there are state and other taxes. Note that the budget for the NYPD (New York State Police) is five times the budget for the Nigeria police.

3.My colleague in the US is earning a fat salary...and every month, a large chunk of that salary goes to paying off his or her or they college debt(for a US doctor, that's the debt accrued in 4 years of normal college plus 4 years of medical school). Then they have to pay something called malpractice insurance (necessary because the US is a sue sue economy). Then there is taxes, and if he or she or they are running a paractice, the costs of the practice, then mortgage costs....there may not be much left over.

4.Lawmakers in the US earn a lot of money via other means than their salary by the way.

That means we should bring down the salaries of these damn fucking senators who do nothing. To see how useless their positions are, they have gone on holiday because of corona but it's the doctors who work day and night.

Well, we could cut the salaries of the senators....but the issue is this.

At best, we spend N1.5 trillion on the National Assembly. We spend N800billion on health care. Meanwhile, developed countries spend somewhere around $100billion or more on health care...that's five times our total budget for this year.

The problem in the end is not that we spend too much on the senators, but that Nigeria as a whole does not make enough money to sustain its 200 million people.

The issue is that since independence, the basis of our economic development has been find a raw material or crop, sell it and share the money. The problem is that the price of oil (and cocoa, cotton, palm oil, gold, etc)...is not controlled by us, it is controlled by the big people in New York and Washington. And sometimes they set the price to their benefit, not ours. Even oil....no matter what our leaders say, we don't determine how we can set the price of oil....

Meanwhile, the US has been, from independence, an industrial nation, using its industrial production as a means of building its prosperity. And yes, they can control and set the price of what they produce. That's why one single state in the US can have a budget of $78 billion dollars...while Nigeria has a budget of less than $30billion.

We have to change the basis of our economic development. Relying on oil , even agriculture, won't help us.

Cos we were never serious about the spending.

When they started passing all the Bills to enrich themselves, Nigerians knew nothing about it, just a few.

Yea 5k is an insult to a health worker who constantly faces a lot of hazards at work but I don't think this will be the right time to push for industrial disharmony.

Haven said that, I think that duty should be left to the masses to push for something better for these health workers.

It is the right time because immediately this plague ends, most of senators would go back to default setting. The executive would turn deaf and dumb to the plight of health worker.
