What Makes A Residential Treatment Center Different From Other Recovery Programs by mediaprizm: 5:43pm On Apr 03, 2020
In the world of teen psychology, the terms “rehab”, “detox”, and “residential treatment center” are often used interchangeably. However, while these sorts of places do have quite a few things in common—their goal is to help their patients overcome current challenges and be able to live their best life—there are still quite a few things that make each of these types of places unique.

Residential treatment centers (RTCs) are often visited by individuals suffering from substance abuse disorders, depression, personality disorders, and various other possible mental health afflictions. In some cases, RTCs will focus on helping their patients learn how to set better goals and pursue a path towards sobriety. On the other hand, unlike many detox locations and rehab centers, substance abuse is just one of many things the experts at residential treatment centers will pay attention to. In order to direct your teen—or anyone else, for that matter—towards a better life, these treatment centers will need to address the whole person.

If your teen is currently suffering from a substance abuse disorder or any other mental health condition, you may be unsure where, exactly, you should turn. If you have tried other treatment centers in the past and were unsuccessful, it can be very tempting to give up hope. However, contrary to what many parents initially assume, there are plenty of treatment options available. By taking the time to understand what each of these options entails, you can help make a major difference in your teen’s life.

In this article, we will discuss how residential treatment centers are different from rehab, detox, and other common treatment facilities. RTCs have helped countless individuals across the United States (and elsewhere around the world) and may be able to make a positive difference in your teen’s life.

What is a Residential Treatment Center?

A residential treatment center, by some definitions, is “either a mental health facility or a drug and/or alcohol or process addiction treatment program that is provided to patients in a residential setting.” In other words, the defining characteristic of these programs is that individuals will actually reside in the treatment center for an extended period of time. A “detox” facility, on the other hand, will focus on directing a patient towards sobriety, but these treatment centers will sometimes have no residential aspect.

The average stay at a residential treatment center can vary tremendously. Many patients will stay for several weeks, though factors such as their specific mental health, insurance coverage, and personal preferences will all also be accounted for. Typically, a stay at a residential treatment center will involve individual therapy sessions, group therapy, group meals, and a personalized treatment plan. Because there will be trained and qualified staff on hand 24 hours of the day, it becomes much easier for your teen to get whatever help they need.

Residential Treatment Centers (RTC) are Different from Detox and Rehabilitation

While many teen residential treatment centers will focus on helping individuals with substance abuse issues, addressing substance abuse is not their sole focus. RTCs are comprehensive treatment centers that will seek to address the entire person. In addition to combating substance abuse issues, these centers will help their patients address various mental health issues and equip them to live their best life.

From both a biological and psychological perspective, there are quite a few variables that cause teenagers to act and behave differently from adults. Because of this, many residential treatment centers focus on specifically treating teens. These centers can offer a unique perspective that teens are more likely to find useful. Programs will focus on things such as developing healthy relationships with others, performing well in school, pursuing and developing life goals, and many other topics. Furthermore, many teens prefer (and benefit from) working in groups of individuals who are similar in age. These specialized treatments—covering much more than ordinary substance abuse issues—help position RTCs from other types of treatment centers.

The Importance of Dual Diagnosis and Personalized Treatment Plans

Over the past few years, the residential treatment community has placed an increased emphasis on practices known as dual diagnosis or co-occurring treatment. Essentially, dual diagnosis is a practice that seeks to simultaneously address a substance abuse disorder along with other mental health conditions.

Substance abuse disorders are strongly correlated with other mental health issues, which is why it usually inappropriate (or at least, less effective) to address either of these conditions in a vacuum. For example, substance abuse disorders can contribute to the onset of depression and depression can increase the likelihood of developing a substance abuse disorder. Rather than simply combining two traditional treatment plans, clinics using dual diagnosis will create a personalized plan designed to specifically address the unique relationship between all relevant conditions.

Dual diagnosis has been proven to create better and longer-lasting treatment outcomes. With a traditional detox or rehab center, the patient may be isolated from abusable substances for a few days, but without addressing what drove them to substance abuse in the first place—such as underlying mental health conditions—the likelihood of relapsing upon release will be much higher.

Striving to Create Lasting Results

The best residential treatment programs for teens will strive to not only provide short-term relief but also provide each patient with the tools and skill sets they need to live their best life in the future. Having follow-up resources available can significantly increase the likelihood that your teen remains sober and is able to continue making healthy choices. Recovering from any mental health condition will be an ongoing battle. If your teen has a resource that can answer their questions, offer advice, and connect them with additional medical attention (as needed), they will be in a much better position to succeed.

Conclusion - What Makes a Residential Treatment Center Different from Other Programs
Whether your teen is suffering from a substance abuse disorder, mental health disorder, or any combination thereof, they may benefit from visiting a residential treatment center. Unlike rehab, detox, and other treatment options, these personal centers offer a patient-focus approach that is committed to creating lasting results. RTCs may not be necessary for all individuals suffering from these issues, but they can certainly have an incredibly positive effect on your teen’s overall well-being.
