UN Commends Nigeria Over Coronavirus Response by prof2007: 5:26pm On Apr 04, 2020
The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has praised the Nigerian government for handling the Coronavirus pandemic well.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populated country, currently has 190 cases of COVID-19 but has managed to keep the death toll to just two. While 24 people have fully recovered and discharged.

UN Secretary General while speaking at a virtual news briefing in New York, referred to Nigeria as a ‘developing country’ that has “shown a remarkable capacity to respond to the coronavirus.”

“I have to say this; some of these developing countries have shown a remarkable capacity to respond. I was quite impressed to see, for instance, Nigeria putting in place and immediately establishing a hospital. “And I saw difficulties in countries that are much more developed to do quickly the same.”

He also renewed his call for a global ceasefire, urging countries in a conflict like Syria, Libya, and Yemen to lay down arms and allow for unified combat against the coronavirus pandemic. The worst is yet to come,” Guterres said, referring to countries beset with fighting.

“The COVID-19 storm is now coming to all these theatres of conflict. The virus has shown how swiftly it can move across borders, devastate countries and upend lives. But there is a huge distance between declarations and deeds — between translating words into peace on the ground and in the lives of people,” Guterres said.

“In many of the most critical situations, we have seen no let-up in fighting — and some conflicts have even intensified.”

No need to commend the government. The reason for their fast response to this issue is because they knew they are not safe. Had it been that this pandemic started from Africa, they(our leaders)would have ran to Western countries for safety purposes.

Lol. Wetin oyinbo no understand about Nigeria plenty. Do they have a choice? They can't go abroad and the virus is dealing with them..the top govt officials. So their response will definitely be fast.

It wouldn't have been if there are options such as flying abroad for treatment and leaving the poor to die

west Africa countries don't have casualties like that, well I wouldn't commend Buhari anyway because he's nonchalant attitude brought this virus in the first place

all thanks to social media that give us this awareness hence Nigerians preparation, left to Buhari and his clueless minister for pain it would have been a sorry case

people have to mount pressure on Buhari before he could order lockdown what take Each state Governors 48hrs

we pray this epidemic come to an end before the 2weeks elapsed. no provision for those that relied on daily means and Buhari will be commended?

They have joined the country in her self-deceit. Other countries are testing thousands of their population a days, we are busy testing and retesting politicians and few people that had contact with them and the few people that returnwd from other countries. They had better stepped up, there so many things wrong with our system.

Let us dimension this very well...

Officials of FG went abroad at the critical time, imported the disease and spread it quickly. They refused to do anything about it...the president was practically begged and coarsed to even talk to Nigerians. He locked down Lagos, Abuja and Ogun State 48 hours after governors announced a lock down and is busy sharing money in the Northern part of the country where he didn't locked. Sincerely hope they have released the funds approved for Lagos. Coordination was/is lacking.

Sanwo-Olu should be the one we should be encouraging for the very good he is doing and the citizens...not the FG.

I doubt if 100k Nigerians have been tested.. Out of 150m

All those Governors that are infected, imagine how many people they might have come in contact with, while those people also spread it across.

We are only deceiving ourselves with the number of infected and death rate.

Abba Kyari staffs are yet to be tested.

somehow you are right, that the testing is not sufficient enough to capture a good number of the citizens, considering the population of the country especially Lagos. I think so many Nigerians have these virus already which they must have mistaken for malaria or fever but they would somehow recover due to their strong immune system and life goes on in our various house. If not for their strong immune system, by now so many people would have been dropping dead on the street and in their houses just like the situation in Equador. God help us all.
