The police in Ekiti State have arrested Mr. Bunmi Ojo, a personal assistant to the former governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Segun Oni, for allegedly arming a gang of suspected robbers in the state.

Ojo was arrested in his home in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital on Tuesday around 6.30am by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and was taken to the headquarters of the state command.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Ekiti State, Mr. Mohammed Jimoh, who confirmed Ojo’s arrest to THE PUNCH on the telephone, said the suspect was still with the police as at 5.05pm.

He said, “ It is confirmed that he was arrested today and he is with us. He is being detained here but investigation is still going on.”

But the Chief Press Secretary to the former governor, Mr. Wale Ojo-Lanre, while reacting to the arrest on behalf of his boss, accused the police of conniving with Governor Kayode Fayemi to harass and intimidate Oni and his aides.

Ojo-Lanre, who spoke on the telephone, said the attempt to cow the opposition would fail.

He said, “You remember that I raised the alarm concerning the plan being hatched by Governor Fayemi to implicate and arraign some aides of the former governor, Chief Segun Oni, on trumped up charges. The Ekiti State Police Command should not join in the devilish script being played by Governor Fayemi and his henchmen against Oni’s aides.

“It is a pity that the police are conniving with Fayemi and others to turn a pure case of armed robbery to political weapon of victimisation. The Ekiti State commissioner of police should be more circumspect in handling this type of issue.”

The Commissioner of Police , Mr. Olayinka Balogun, had also said that the command would not allow the politicisation of the arrest of the eight robbery suspects.

The CP, who gave the assurance while parading the suspected members of the gang last week, stated that the police would not be involved in politics.

The Special Adviser (Media) to the Governor, Mr. Mojeed Jamiu, had asked Oni and his aides to direct their anger towards the police, saying Fayemi knew nothing about the arrest of the suspected robbers.

The wife of a police inspector was said to be among the suspects arrested in Ido-Ekiti. THE PUNCH learnt that the leader of the gang had alleged that the former governor gave its members N3.9m mobilisation fee.

The suspected gang leader, who said they were given arms by the former governor through his personal assistant, added that they were recruited to protect Oni and members of his party (the Peoples Democratic Party) and intimidate members of other political parties in the 2009 governorship rerun in the state.
