It does not attack anything besides the lungs, and only a type 2 cell in the lungs.

The reason the heart, liver and kidneys are affected is due to lack of oxygen in the blood and septic shock.

It's not the virus itself that actually kills, it's ones own body that kills them.

The virus attaches to the cell via the receptor proteins and infiltrates the cell to inject its RNA/DNA payload in order to make copies of itself. The host cell then dies, this triggers response of the immune system which sometimes release cytokines in overwhelming numbers in something called a cytokine storm.

The storm leads to inflammation of the lung linings, which lead to fluids entering the gas exchange chambers of the lungs, thus causing pneumonia and difficulty in breathing since the patient cannot take enough oxygen. This causes ARDS, or Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome where there's too little oxygen going into the bloodstream, leading to organs starved of oxygen.

Patients experiencing ARDS are hooked to ventilators to help them breathe, and 50% of such people eventually die.


Therefore the virus does not attack anything besides hijacking certain lung cells to make copies of itself. It is the body's immune response that sometimes go into overdrive and kills the victim.
