Covid-19 Lockdown Loosens In Kano:people Thronged To Markets. by SeeAfrica(m): 4:47pm On Apr 23, 2020
In a bid to mitigate the plight of its Residents amid the wide spread distraught caused by covid-19 lockdown, and to provide the majority of the state who are Muslims, the opportunity to restock in preparation for Ramadan, the Kano state government had decided to call off the lockdown just for a day, which is today.
Sequel to the decision that was made yesterday, the state popular market opened with it usual frenzy but this time it was more heightened,as the market was bee hived with people who came out to purchase the little that they could before the day runs out. There was little or no space to step a foot. You would have to jostle through the enormous crowd before you can make a purchase and if you are not careful and agile, you can be stampeded with out anyone knowing.
Virtually,All shops were inundated with long and terrifying queues right from when the market gates were made open.
As a result of the intense atmosphere and congested space coupled with the terrifying glares of the sun in the noonday, caused some people to drop unconscious on the ground only to be revived by those around them.
From vegetable sellers to food condiments retailers, to diary product sellers, etc all were exhausted along with their commodities .
The scarcity of farm produce,Meats and diary products,Food stuffs, provisions etc caused a hiked in their price to an agonizing rates without any option of debating price.Take it or leave it.
Many were only able to buy a handful so as not to risk not buying at all.
The fear, anxiety and uncertainty that hung on the face of most buyers were palpable. To some, they were like the Biblical widow of zarephath, who came to spent the little Naira that they had scrub hard to get.
They don't know what will happen next if they expend the little that they had purchased amid the stiffening lockdown.
It seemed the people were more afraid of hunger than they should be of Covid-19.
Kano had barely witnessed six days of lockdown and the resulting tales are horrid. This now made me to imagine the sufferings that lagosians are dealing with for the past four weeks??
