Nigerians have been reacting to the circular from the Executive Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Muhammad Nami, to taxpayers over payment of taxes.

The circular, which was an update on palliative measures to cushion the effect of covid-19 on taxpayers, asked corporate organizations in some sectors of the economy to consider making payment of their annual returns earlier than the due date apart from their normal monthly obligations.

According to the circular, the Executive Chairman said, ‘’I wish to specially make an appeal to corporate bodies in the sectors above to go the extra mile at this time to cooperate with us in making special arrangements to pay their taxes. They may consider, for instance, a situation where they can commence payment of their annual returns earlier than the due date apart from their normal monthly obligations.’’

‘’This has become necessary in order to ease some of the cash flow gaps being experienced by the government at this critical time’’.

Some Nigerians took to Twitter to expressed their anger as they believe the government is insensitive to what Nigerians and businesses are going through.

A tweeter user was unhappy as the government is using FIRS to tax companies that are barely surviving.

Just imagine! In this era of global economic meltdown while some nations are giving bailouts to persons/ companies? Why is everyone just struggling to milk Nigerians dry without any tangible consideration under this hopeless govt?

This mumu was making noise that Babatunde Fowler did nothing @ FIRS (even if he has his limitations) so this is part of the revenue drive he wants to embark upon? Guess brethren can see the kind of myopic but greedy people lording over this nation?

Other countries are busy bailing out businesses with billions of dollars to save them from collapse due to lockdown, here we are busy looking for a way to strangle life of business that are barely able to survive this economic hardship as of the lockdown. Chai 9ja, na who do us this thing

Few days ago Nami said he had to wipe out the rot left behind by Fowler and start all over. This was before oil price dipped to negative numbers. I guess he did not see that coming.

As it is, we will be running deficits for all revenue targets because many sectors have lost track on their key input factor. The Director, instead of adjusting expectations and recalibrating projected income....is now cutting corners to force the scorecard.

I would like to see how he ends the year...is he going to blame Fowler for short revenue?

I swear! grin

Private sector should be given tax holiday so unemployment does not worsen. Buhari should send Nami for a certificate course in public administration. grin

It seems FIRS is only pretending not to know what many companies/businesses are facing in this difficult period.
