Do you know that there are over 300 dog breeds altogether? The FCI has categorized them into groups according to their history, size, weight and function. over the next few days, we will breakdown the groups accordingly, as well as list some examples of the breeds in each group.

GROUP 1 - SHEEP AND CATTLE DOGS

The dogs in this group generally weigh between 22 – 45kg and are around 22inches – 30inches tall, they have smooth, shaggy, often long coats and they are grouped on the basis of their history of sheep herding, tending and guarding characteristics. Dogs in this group include the Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, Shetland Sheepdog, Australian Cattle Dog, German Shepherd Dog, Belgian Malinois, Welsh corgi, and a host of others that fall within similar features.

GROUP 2 - This group is broken into 3 sections, and they are;

2(a) PINSCHER & SCHNAUZER
2(b) MOLOSSIAN TYPE
2(c) SWISS MOUNTAIN & CATTLE DOGS

PINSCHER AND SCHNAUZER - GROUP 2(a)

These breeds usually have a dark and smooth coat, although some can be grey or tan. The weight for dogs in this category varies, with some larger breeds weighing as much as 38.5kg - 62kg and miniatures weighing between 4.5kg and 8kg. They are grouped according to their hunting, guarding and companionship history. Dogs in this group include the Dobermann, Miniature Pinscher, German Pinscher, Schnauzer, etc.

GROUP 2: Section 2(b) - MOLOSSIAN TYPE
Breeds in this category usually possess a short, smooth and thick coat. Their weight varies from 34kg to 70kg, with the typical height between 22 and 30inches. They are grouped according to their hunting, herding, driving and guarding history. Dogs in this group include Rottweiler, Dogue de Bordeaux, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Boxer, Great Dane, Bullmastiff, Bulldog, Italian Cane Corso, Neopolitan Mastiff, Tosa, Presa Canario, and a some more.

GROUP 3 - "TERRIER" is from the Latin word terra, meaning "earth" or "soil"wink. This group of dogs are grouped according to their role of hunting vermin. They are usually small, wiry, game and fearless.

This group is broken into 3 sections, and they are;

3(a) LARGE AND MEDIUM SIZED TERRIERS
3(b) SMALL SIZED TERRIERS
3(c) BULL TYPE AND TOY TERRIERS

GROUP 3 - Section - 3 (a) LARGE AND MEDIUM SIZED TERRIERS

This group generally have wiry or curly coats, with tan and black common colours. Terriers in this category range from 8kg to 11kg, although some larger breeds can reach up to 18kg. Terriers rarely grow larger than 20 inches, with many around 15 inches. Dogs in this group include the Airedale Terrier, Irish Terrier, Fox Terrier, Welsh Terrier and Parson Russell Terrier.

GROUP 3 - Section - 3(b) SMALL SIZED TERRIERS

This subgroup generally have wiry coats, although some can have smooth undercoats; they are generally a sandy or tan colour, with some black or pepper. They generally weigh between 6kg and 8kg although some, such as the Skye Terrier, can weigh up to 12kg Height ranges from 8inches to 14 inches . Dogs in this group include the Jack Russell Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Norfolk Terrier and West Highland White Terrier.
