The Federal Government has said that Nigerians infected by the coronavirus would not be evacuated to the country, adding that they would receive treatment in their country of residence.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the positive cases could not wait till they were repatriated home before starting treatment, noting that this would be dangerous to their host community.

The MFA spokesman, Mr Ferdinand Nwonye, said this on Friday in response to questions from our correspondent in Abuja on the planned evacuation of over 2,000 Nigerians abroad, some of whom have tested positive for COVID-19.

The PUNCH had reported that 72 Nigerians in Guangzhou and 10 others in the United Kingdom tested positive for the virus.

Responding to queries on the process for the evacuation, Nwonye stated, “Those who tested positive would be receiving treatment in China. Are they going to wait till they are evacuated, did they know when the evacuation would take place?

“The best option is that they would submit themselves to the local authorities and receive treatment because the evacuation would be by countries and in batches. Staying there without treatment is even dangerous to the host community.”

Meanwhile, the number of Nigerians who tested positive for the coronavirus in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province, China, has risen to 74.

Our correspondent gathered on Saturday that two more persons returned positive on Friday, increasing the number to 74 from the 72 reported on Wednesday.

It was learnt that the Guangzhou Municipal authorities had informed the Nigerian Consulate about the latest development.

This was the stance of most progressive Nigerians from day one.

But In defense of allowing your relations to come into the country before you imposed a lock down, you were quick to boldly tell us that you can't reject any Nigerian of whatever health status to come into the country.

People are now afraid to constructively criticize some government policies now for fear of being labeled ipob, PDP or just a Buhari hater.

You talk about constructive criticism, yet you still employ a heavy dose of sensationalism?

At what point did the FG ever knowingly allow already confirmed COVID-19 sick Nigerians into the country?

Are you saying all the measures set up at the airports were all for fun if they indeed deliberately allowed sick patients of Nigerian citizenship into the country?

Did you not see that every country in the world still left their airports open despite the risk of having an index case, just as Nigeria did then?

Do you not see countries still allowing the return of their own citizens and airlifting their citizens from locked down countries, despite that they are already being raveged by the pandemic.

So what exactly has the government done wrong in allowing asymptomatic Nigerians the time to return to their own country, like every other responsible country did and are still doing despite the horors of the pandemic?

You are exhibiting the same tactics i complained here: blackmail.

It's a new pattern by you guys and it's working well; criticize and be labeled PDP or ipob even when they know you are clearly not one.

But I did not label you, yet you could not show proof of your wild claims that the FG knowingly allowed sick Nigerians into the country.

Sensationalism should not trump objectivity.

It is sad that we got the COVID-19, but no responsible government has ever shut its door on its own citizens who found themselves out of their original residence when the pandemic became a reality.

The FG took all necessary measures to ensure that no sick patient passed through the airports as all responsible countries who still had the time did, but eventually failed because of the incubation nature of the disease.

Air borders were supposed to be shut weeks before the government finally did. But for sime reasons, the government decided to be checking for temperature of emigrants only. During that period, a lot of convid19 carriers were allowed in.

But before then, some Nigerian students in Wuhan were denied request to be evacuated from Wuhan to Nigeria for fear of the virus coming into Nigeria.

But when the virus hit UK and USA, exactly the time most countries already shut their borders, some top men decided to delay shutting our airspace until their relations and associates were evacuated to Nigeria. Unfortunately, most of the COVID19 cases we have today were directly as a result of these relatives and associates who were allowed into the country later.

So is the bolded not a very commendable rejection by the FG, in denying any return of Nigerians from the location of the origins of the disease, knowing the incubation period?

Infact, if they had been brough back from Wuhan specificly, your type would have used that to show how irresponsible the government is.

Even till 2weeks ago, countries were still airlifting their citizens from different parts of the world.

Even the USA allowed people from a cruise ship that was already known to be infected with the disease to fly back to the USA.

The COVID-19 cases that abound in the world outside China are due to many governments not shutting its door on their own citizens who were not confirmed to be sick, but carried the virus.

So Nigeria was not more useless than any of the countries we love to praise.

Besides, would you have wanted to be left in Italy or France or USA if you had only gone there for a conference or holiday, without any means of continued residence in that country?

While you care not about the bigwigs like Atiku's son or Buhari's daughter, or the most senior employee of the Presidency who was out doing his job on behalf of Nigeria, you should worry that many Nigerians needed to return to their homes, families, and jobs at that time.

on that note, the FG of Nigeria did nothing wrong, so stop lying that the country knowingly allowed sick patients back into the country.

This move that you commend now, was the same arrangement that had been allowed when the airport was still open, hence all the checks and screening done at the airport then.

But Mr.President daughter, Abba Kyari and other high profile Nigerians were allowed into the nation under a long duration before our airspace is shut down even with them being in red zones of this pandemic?

What of cases wherein suspected or affected Nigerians are being treated with disdain as in the case of China, so they are expected to continue suffering outside there?

No qualms.

I was also of the opinion that borders and airports should have been closed before we had the Italian case, but with more introspection, I had to concede to the social and economic implications of that.

Look around and sample the opinion of Nigerians who are suffering the lockdown.

Their anger at government, is the same anger you would have seen when the economic and social implications of locking down the borders and airports had revealed itself.

In fact, some would have concluded it wasn't necessary and it was an overkill and government should open up and screen those coming in, so business and society would not be killed before COVID-19 began its own killing,

Ironically, those were the very steps the government took.

So what measures do you thinks would have been the best approach that would have been acceptable to all Nigerians regardless of what location of the world they were temporarily?

Somehow, you slowly managing to make this discuss personal. But it's okay. I expected it.

Now, a lot of Nigerians welcomed the idea of not allowing those Nigerian students in Wuhan come into the country. Their case was only sighted when later, the virus became a pandemic in the UK and USA.. and of worst proportion than that of Wuhan. But the government didn't deem it necessary to shut down our airspace by then until the important people came in.

If other countries are airlifting their citizens up till now, why is Nigeria placing a ban on it? The FG should go ahead and copy those countries if they have the capacity.

And for those who traveled to COVID19 ridden countries like Italy for holidays or conferences, they can should be airlifted back to Nigeria if the FG does not know the use of Nigeria embassy in Italy.

I care not about Atiku and Buhari's daughter? You finally showed that characteristics i was complaining about.

Look, as much as I may not cry if anything happens to them, I don't wish them bad in any form.

My point has be clear from day one. Nigerian students in Wuhan and other places should matter to Nigeria as much as elites children regardless of the job they went to do.

National interest should supercede any individual or family interests.

And if the economic and social implications were the reasons for delayed border closure, why is it still not being considered?

The government should have locked down all our entry borders since early Feb.where in the super-spreaders of this infection were fleeing from red zones into Nigeria esp.returning Chinese. They did that because important VIPs are yet to return to the country.

Imagine Lai Mohammed saying "Nigeria will not lock down our airports" or "prevent Nigerians travelling to China".Govt was obsessed with checking temperature with infrared thermometers.Meanwhile, most of the super-spreaders were in their asymptomatic stage then were just trooping into the country.

There's a reason why countries maintain embassies in other countries. It is mainly to safeguard the lives and properties of the home state.

The embassies are supposed to take stock of the stranded Nigerians, provide temporary palliatives to them, test them and then assist them to come back to Nigeria.

The only embassy that seem active this period was the Nigerian embassy in China. And that was weeks after the shabby treatment of Nigerians over there became a national embarrassment.

The same reason every country considered it, then did not consider it by imposing a lockdown, then are reconsidering it by lifting lockdowns despite the disease still ravaging in all of those countries.

You have to weigh what is important at the specific time.

What was considered important that resulted in lockdowns all over the world, has now become irrelevant if it would result to a collapse of the different national economies, hence the easing of the lockdowns.

If it gets worse, the lockdowns will come back again like a carrot and stick approach to solving not just an health pandemic, but a socio-economic catastrophe.

If we had locked down airports and borders since the earliest possible time in February, and still sustained it till date such that there was no case in Nigeria, while all our neighbouring countries suffered the pandemic, how would we have managed the economic fallout of such and supported Nigerians stranded outside?
