WhatsApp is arguable the biggest instant messaging platform in the world right now. With billions of users on Android and iOS, WhatsApp remains as relevant as ever. In fact, it is the primary texting platform for many people today.

One of the factors behind the success of WhatsApp is its ad-free policy. Remember when WhatsApp had a semi-premium monetization model? You had to pay $1 a year to use it. Facebook acquired the app in a $16 billion deal, and the $1 requirement is gone.

Over the past few months, there have been reports about WhatsApp implementing ads on the platform. Back in January, there was a report from the Wall Street Journal that suggested that Facebook did not plan to serve ads through WhatsApp. However, new information suggests that Facebook still has plans to implement ads on WhatsApp.

Facebook also owns Instagram. Both Facebook and Instagram apps support ads. WhatsApp remains the only Facebook service not to feature ads yet.

Facebook is reportedly working on unifying its messaging platforms. We expect that this will happen before the implementation of ads on WhatsApp. Facebook will likely leverage on WhatsApp status updates to serve paid content.
