The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has relieved all personal staff and political appointees attached to his office with immediate effect, pending further actions, Global Times has learnt.

Personal Staff: Special Advisers, Special Assistants and Senior Special Assistants attached to the office of the Governor, Chief of Staff, Secretary to State Government; Commissioners and Head of Agencies are affected by this development.

“The action is necessary to weed out loyalists of former Chief of Staff, Taiwo Akerele who resigned last Friday to the surprise of the Governor and all his loyalists.

“It is also to deter other top aides who may have concluded plans to resign,” says Dr. Odaro Ize-Omoregbe.

The truth is that Gov. Obaseki was imported from Lagos by Oshiomole. He has no political structure. He is dependent on his youthful deputy who is also relatively a neophyte in Edo politics and happens to come from the same zone as Oshiomole.

What is currently playing out is that many politicians serving under Gov. Obaseki who actually have long been in politics before the Obaseki was imported are falling in line with the interests of their political families in protection of their political future. Obviously, except for few like deputy governor, secretary to the government, the speaker, PDP state chairman, etc who are gaining financially big time, others know that standing with Obaseki comes with a big political risk. Obaseki is not ignorant of this as his recent mass sack move is a smart one intended to kill the likely bad publicity impending mass resignations of these politicians would bring.

The postponement of National Sports Festival on which Obaseki invested so much and intended to use to launch his 2nd term bid was a big setback for him. Unfortunately, when COVID-19 swooped he has less resources to respond adequately, which is also a minus for him.

On the other hand, the COVID-19 lockdown favoured Oshiomole and afforded him time to pull strings. He may have gone silent but he sleeps a lot less now than before plotting his strategies.

The weeks ahead will be politically interesting in Edo State.

This is a case of fearful panic on the part of the governor.

He was caught off guard by the resignation of his CoS, so he needs to save himself from the embarrassment of his whole cabinet resigning, so he rather sack them himself.

In this his state of paranoia, the governor will not even trust his wife or mother.

He was really dealt a heavy and embarrassing blow.

He is afraid of massive resignation that could lead to media disgrace and sudden boost to osho camp.

Whoever pulled his Chief of staff out must have made the guy the devil's deal.

A chief of staff is often the closest person a governor has his most trusted aide.
He knows more than anybody else about internal workings of the govt.
Whatever deal that made that guy resign has got obaseki boxed in for good.

I think that chief of staff is going to be the running mate to the APC candidate.
