Friday, January 7, 2011 Ondo bars illiterate delegates from voting Sunday Aborisade The Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State on Thursday barred delegates considered to be illiterates from voting in the House of Representatives primary elections. http://odili.net/news/source/2011/jan/7/802.html The development was however greeted with protests in the nine federal constituencies across the state where the primaries took place. Our correspondent, who monitored the election in Akure, the state capital, observed that the 'illiterate delegates' refused to leave the venue of the primaries despite the fact that they were disenfranchised. The Publicity Secretary of the PDP in the state, Chief Adeyemi Adedipe, explained that the measure was aimed at making the election "credible, free, fair and as secret as possible." Also, the state police command said on Thursday that it had banned politicians, either appointed or elected, in the state from entering the venues of the primaries with armed escort or convoy of vehicles. The command said it was an offence for anybody to carry arms into the venues of the primaries. The Commissioner of Police in charge of the command, Mrs. Chintua Amajor-Onu, who announced the ban at a news conference in Akure, said the directive became necessary in order to avoid crisis during the primaries of the political parties. She explained that the command would not condone any act capable of jeopardising the peace currently being enjoyed in the state The commissioner also directed all the delegates and party officials to submit themselves for "professional frisk search" being carried out by policemen at the venues of the primaries. "It is incumbent on all political party aspirants and all the delegates currently engaged in the conduct of the ongoing party primaries to honourably conduct themselves before, during and after the exercise," the CP said. She said that the command would not hesitate to arrest and prosecute any politician who ignored the order. "We don't want any display of hooliganism at the venues of the primaries. The command will not hesitate to apprehend any member of any political party found guilty," she added. |

Re: Illiterate Delegates Banned From Voting In Ondo State by aloyemeka1: 4:18am On Jan 10, 2011 |
You dey mind them. Illiterates do not have the right to participate in the same government who takes decisions over their lives. What has literacy got to do with voting?. Even a retarded monkey can cast a vote. |

Very stupit! I wish someone would come out and tell us why they took such a drastic step! |
Re: Illiterate Delegates Banned From Voting In Ondo State by Ibime(m): 7:35am On Jan 10, 2011 |
I agree with this. Illiterates should not be allowed to vote. They can sell their vote for a bag of rice. Too often, we have illiterates like MC Eleweomo controlling the voting process. BAN ALL ILLITERATES FROM VOTING!!! |
Re: Illiterate Delegates Banned From Voting In Ondo State by slap1(m): 7:43am On Jan 10, 2011 |

fstranger1:because they are illiterates who know nothing than to be used to further rotten the system.we must raise the level of our democracy whether we like it or not. Are there illiterates in US politics ? yes or no |
Re: Illiterate Delegates Banned From Voting In Ondo State by slap1(m): 8:24am On Jan 10, 2011 |
^^ What makes you think that the ones that finally voted are not the actual illiterates? |
Re: Illiterate Delegates Banned From Voting In Ondo State by johndoe200: 8:29am On Jan 10, 2011 |
Good for them. We should ban all the illitrates from NL as well. How do we know them? They are all the supporters of Atiku and the criminal coup plotter Buhari. |

Re: Illiterate Delegates Banned From Voting In Ondo State by fstranger1: 12:53pm On Jan 10, 2011 |
~Bluetooth: Are you trying to say that it is right for Chuba Okadigbo , OBJ, Tinubu, Andy Uba, Bankole to steal, and it is wrong for someone like Omisore to do the same? I dont get your point really! |
Re: Illiterate Delegates Banned From Voting In Ondo State by Nobody: 1:04pm On Jan 10, 2011 |
fstranger1:dont twist my point.nobody has any justification to steal either literate or illiterate. what we must do is to get rid of those that have nothing to add to our democracy. |
Re: Illiterate Delegates Banned From Voting In Ondo State by fstranger1: 1:16pm On Jan 10, 2011 |
~Bluetooth: So is there any justification for their disenfranchisement? Why do you think they shouldnt be allowed to have a say in the kind of leaders that rule over them? |
Re: Illiterate Delegates Banned From Voting In Ondo State by Ibime(m): 1:25pm On Jan 10, 2011 |
An illiterate cannot sift through the issues cos he doesn't know how to read, so his decision on whom to vote for is based on who brought Garri and Rice to his village. What are illiterates doing as delegates in the first place? The Amala politics of our PDP gangsters can only survive where there is proliferation of illiteracy. The person who coined the phrase "illiteracy na disease" deserves a nobel prize because the disease of Nigeria is the enthronement of Vampires by illiterates and semi-illiterates. And illiteracy doesn't necessarily mean inability to read and write. Inability to follow basic laws and procedures is illiteracy - as exhibited by many politicians. We even have an illiterate in Aso Rock - Dame Patience. |

fstranger1:disenfranchise of voting as delegate is what we are talking about here, which is what i support.these are people that control the grassroot movements for political parties and they are expected to be well informed, not some morons who can't say no to greedy politicians in critical times. |
Re: Illiterate Delegates Banned From Voting In Ondo State by fstranger1: 1:30pm On Jan 10, 2011 |
Ibime: Lets be clear, there is a difference between illiteracy and IQ Most of this illiterate people are way smarter, and often times more industrious, that the so called literate populace. It is very easy, change the medium of communication in our polity to our local language and you have the tables turned on all the so called "literate elite." |

~Bluetooth: Why are you changing the goal post like madam Kobo? Stay on point: Why is it a crime for Nigerians who cannot write and read in English language not worthy to be voting delegates in our democracy? |
Re: Illiterate Delegates Banned From Voting In Ondo State by Nobody: 1:41pm On Jan 10, 2011 |
fstranger1:how many time do i have to give you my reasons ? we must raise the current level of our democracy. haven't you heard of geniocracy before ? (fools should not be allowed to vote ) |
Re: Illiterate Delegates Banned From Voting In Ondo State by fstranger1: 1:46pm On Jan 10, 2011 |
~Bluetooth: Are you insinuating that any one who cannot read and write in English language is a FOOL? |

~Bluetooth: SO you agree with me that some of these illiterates should not be disenfranchised? |
Re: Illiterate Delegates Banned From Voting In Ondo State by Nobody: 2:17pm On Jan 10, 2011 |
fstranger1:how do you now begin to sort the intelligent from the unintelligent ones ? why not just set a standard so that everybody can compete for it ? |
Re: Illiterate Delegates Banned From Voting In Ondo State by fstranger1: 2:21pm On Jan 10, 2011 |
~Bluetooth: How do you do that with the literate ones? |
Re: Illiterate Delegates Banned From Voting In Ondo State by Ibime(m): 2:25pm On Jan 10, 2011 |
Democracy is not run on the "settlement" and "kola nut" wisdom of our villages. There are fundamental principles, such as are beyond the thought process of anyone who doesn't read up on democracy and law. During the YarAdua imbroglio, an illiterates thought process would likely have assumed that another Northerner should take over from Yara, rather than follow the constitution which states that the VP take over. That's why dem illiterate alamajiris in the North could not understand the consternation shown by Southerners at the undemocratic behaviour of the FEC and NASS. That's just one example why illiterates should be banned from voting. |
Re: Illiterate Delegates Banned From Voting In Ondo State by fstranger1: 2:30pm On Jan 10, 2011 |
Ibime: Translate the constitution into a language they can understand Extend the same benevolence that you have enjoyed, from whosoever taught you how to read, to them You sure did not fall from heaven knowing out to read; at least, we know that English language is not your language. Some one was kind enough to teach it to you. Why dont you do same to these illiterates? |
