4) Ironsi was the only Military head of state who maintained true federalism. Before Ironsi came to power, Nigeria was a federation of 4 Regions with each Region having resource control and fiscal responsibility of paying the Federal Government 25% of what each Region realised. This act of controlling resources and paying the Federal government an agreed percentage, as opposed to what we have now where governments controls resources and pays the states, is what made Nigeria Federal in nature. Ironsi made sure this proces continued. Other military governments, such as that of Gowon, abolished the 4 Regions, took away resource control, removed the fiscal policy and embarked on creating states, thereby destroying true federalism in Nigeria. Ironsi was a good man and a very conservative soldier. He wasn’t really politically inclined and was not prepared for political leadership of a big and ethnically diverse country like Nigeria when he assumed office.
Just like most people from the SE, he was also very ethnocentric.

As a result of the above, he failed as supreme commander and head of state. He was Clueless, incompetent, and too scared to take tough decisions. Even people like Nzeogwu and Ademoyega who were in prison knew quite well that he would be overthrown quickly by northern officers. The brutal killing of Igbos in May 1966 under his regime without him doing anything to halt the situation was the height of his incompetence.

Looking back now, I think things might have turned out better for Nigeria if the original plotters of the January 15 coup had taken over the government instead of the reactionary regime of Ironsi. Those guys were better educated and prepared for governance than Ironsi.

It is also important to state clearly that the senate didn’t voluntarily hand over power to Ironsi. After the death of the prime minister, the top brass of the military met and decided to hijack the government of the country having foiled the original plot of Ifeajuna and his gang. They gave the politicians no other choice than to handover to the military. If the remaining members of Balewa government had their way, they would have preferred Dipcharima to step in as the prime minister instead of handing over to Ironsi. Ironsi forcefully hijacked the government and not the other way round.

You should know that Gowon abolished the regions to prevent secession. He didn't do so just for the sake of doing so. He did so because he felt that our federalism would be exploited by the likes of Ojukwu to break the country up.
