[size=14pt]Jonathan signs amended constitution[/size]

President Goodluck Jonathan says that the controversy over the signing into law of the amended constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was not necessary.

Dr Jonathan said this while assenting to the first and second amendment of the 1999 constitution in the presidential villa.

In his speech, the President tracked back to 1999 when the constitution was drafted, describing it as a unique occasion.

�The first of its kind in the democratic dispensation� Dr. Jonathan said and asked that change should be allowed in any society including Nigeria.

President Jonathan thanked the leadership of the National Assembly for accomplishing the first stage of the amendments in collaboration with the state assemblies and the executive arms of government even in the midst of controversy.

The President stated that he is optimistic that he will still be here to sign further amendments of the constitution and also commended the cordial relationship between the executive and the legislature in the country, observing that laws made by man are subject to constant change to meet the challenges of the times.

The President�s commendations continued as he also acknowledged the National Assembly for carrying out the enormous task of constitutional amendment and that more amendments will come until the constitution reflects the will of the people and not be seen as a material handed over to Nigerians by the military.

President Goodluck Jonathan signed the two documents under the watchful eyes of the vice president, Architect Namadi Sambo, the Senate President, the speaker of the House of Representatives, the Attorney General of the Federation and the Secretary to the Federal Government and other principle officers.

After the signing ceremony, the Senate President, Senator David Mark told journalists that the nation must be made to move forward not minding the controversy surrounding the signing into law of the amended constitution.

In regards to the signed amended constitution, a judge in Lagos said it's null and void.
