OP, Tanzania actually became independent on the 9 December, 1961 and not 1964 as stated in your post. The catch here is that from 1961-1964, it was known as the Republic of Tanganyika.

1964 was the year in which the Republic of Tanganyika[then already an independent country] merged with the People's Republic of Zanzibar to form/create the United Republic of Tanzania.
