COVID-19: You can now bury the dead, Obiano tells Anambra people

Anambra State Government has announced a resumption of funerals, but with strict compliance to COVID-19 protocols.

Most copses during the lockdown were kept in morgues as a measure to contain the spread of the lethal virus.

But Obiano during his 5th special broadcast to update the people of the state on new measures adopted in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic, lifted the ban on funerals.

The governor added that corpses must be buried on the day of arrival with no fanfare; attendance should not be more than 30 family members.

``As a matter of fact, the grave must be ready before corpses arrive at the state boundaries of Anambra State.

``Let me quickly add that relatives of the deceased, who accompany corpses home, must also proceed on 14-day self-isolation,’’ Obiano stated.

The Governor said the state had adopted a new approach to COVID-19, which would entail mounting active search for people with Covid-19 symptoms in all communities.

He said the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), WHO and UNICEF had assured of their support in ensuring success of the exercise.

``I implore you to cooperate with our specially trained COVID-19 Team, when they visit your community by giving useful information that will help them to obtain necessary samples for testing.’’

Meanwhile the Government had directed all civil servants including teachers of primary, secondary and tertiary schools in Anambra State to resume work on Monday, May 4.

``Arrangements are ongoing to ensure that the teachers undergo comprehensive COVID-19 training in readiness for the eventual re-opening of schools at the right time.

``I am delighted to inform you that we have set up two potential COVID-19 Testing Centres in our dear state.

``We urge the management of NCDC to expedite action on the accreditation and approval processes to ensure immediate use of the facilities to the benefit of our people,’’ Gov. Obiano said.
