Many products do not always live up to their words. Some do not have the necessary information to assist you to decide whether to use them or not.

Cosmetic products can have harmful effects on users such as painful breakouts and irritations, and contact dermatitis.

Knowing this, what then should you do to protect your skin against the harmful effects of these unsuspecting products? Do a patch test!

Before you extensively apply a new cream, lotion, ointment, or chemical product on your skin, place a small amount of the product on the inside of your upper arm, at the back of your ear. Repeat this 3 times 24 hours apart (that is, 3 days).

If you do not notice any redness, swelling, itching, or burning on that spot, it’s OK for you to use.

But this shouldn't be enough.

It is much safer to know what ingredients are safe for your skin type. From there, cultivate the habit of reading about what ingredients manufacturers have combined to make the product.

Are you already a victim of the wrath of a new product? Does your product cause your skin to itch, burn, inflame, or develop rashes? Stop using it.

It is a common notion that things have to “get worse before they get better.” But, if you’re experiencing painful breakouts and irritation that is not the case.

As first aid, if your skin is irritated after it has come into contact with a new product (cream, ointment, gel, lotion, etc.), splash the affected area with enough cold water or use a cold pack to soothe the irritation.

If the itching is worrying you, use 1% hydrocortisone cream or an oral antihistamine to stop the itch. Both meds are available in the drugstores.

If you find that your irritation is severe and not going away. Seek medical help as soon as possible!
