The latest research from Strategy Analytics has revealed that global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2020 dropped by 17% year-on-year. Altogether, a total of 275 million units were shipped. This reportedly makes it the worst quarterly performance in the history of the smartphone industry.

Samsung still maintained the number one spot, holding 21.2% of the market share. Coming second is Huawei with 17.6% of the market share. Apple holds the third spot with 14.3%. Rounding up the top 5 were Xiaomi with 10% and Oppo with 8.2%.

The drastic drop in smartphone shipments to 275 million units in Q1 2020 is not much of a surprise, considering the coronavirus pandemic ravaging the world right now. In comparison, the first quarter of 2019 recorded a total shipment of 330.4 million units.

Even though Samsung maintained the top position, it was still the most hit of the top five brands. The company reported a total shipment of 58.3 million units. This is a 19% drop from its 71.8 million units in the same period last year. It is also the lowest for Samsung in eight years.

Huawei, in second position, reported an 18% decline with 48.5 million units shipped in Q1 2020. For Apple, the 43.1 million units shipped in Q1 2020 meant a 9% decline. Xiaomi shipped 27.5 million units in the first quarter of 2020, a 0% drop from Q1 2019. Oppo then rounded up the Top 5 list with 22.6 million units shipped in Q1 2020, a decline of 24%.

Samsung low sales is as a result of exynos chips, half baked 108mp camera. No body in their right mind will buy $1400 phone with a mediocre chip.
