DStv, GOtv hike price as MultiChoice implements 7.5% VAT
ON May 6, 2020 7:30 AM / IN
Business / BY Oboh.

Pay television service provider, MultiChoice Nigeria, said it would commence the implementation of the new Value Added Tax, VAT, rate, which may lead to a hike in the prices of its DStv and GOtv packages, Vanguard has learned.

The new VAT regime, which came into effect on February 1, raised the rate of VAT from five percent to 7.5 percent on goods and services.

Since coming into effect four months ago, MultiChoice has absorbed the 2.5 percent hike on behalf of its subscribers, an action that has kept that VAT rate at the pre-February rate of five percent.

Sources told Vanguard that there is no way the pay television giants can continue to pay the difference between the old and the new rates for much longer, as this has impacted very negatively on its finances.

The source said: “Pay television service is not exempted from VAT and I want to believe that MultiChoice is the only company still charging the old VAT rate on its products and services. It is important to note that VAT is not part of the turnover of companies, which they, in fact, collect on behalf of the Federal Government and remit same on a particular date.”

The source added that MultiChoice may have waited for four months to effect the new rate, in the hope that, as widely speculated, the Federal Government might revert to the old rate before the end of the first quarter of the year.

“There were speculations that the Federal Government would return to the old rate, but recent pronouncements by government officials that there would be no return to the old rate may have forced the company into a decision despite the best of intentions,” the source noted.

Another source told Vanguard that the pay-television company is also planning to phase out some of its legacy packages on DStv and GOtv platforms and replace them with new ones to create capacity for new content additions and give them distinct Nigerian identities.

Even with Nigeria facing a depression, these companies want to inflict more suffering? Blame your Government who refused to develop their own state TV stations. Nothing will be done, Nigerians will have to cough up more to watch decent television.

A 40m populated South Africa is able to operate and run a satellite TV network in a country of 200m whom cannot even run a 21st century TV single station but have the highest paid political leaders in the world should call for concern...

It is unexplainable...

TSTV choked itself. Nigerians were ready to ditch DSTV. But they were quite unserious. You want to unseat DSTV and you think it'd be a small task? Hell no!

After all the constricting policies of this clueless band ruling us including 7% VAT increase with the background hanging IMF $3.4M debts payment to be sourced from increased electricity tariffs next year?

Now Multichoice wants to add their own perhaps because of VAT increment? Abeg make una leave us alone.

Seems you dont understand how corporate wars are being fought.
They choked the outfit at infancy and bribed the Nigerian government officials heavily to nail TSTVs coffin.
Billions of Naira exchanged hands in the covert coporate ambush.

I am presently on compact. If there should be any increase from the N6800 that I am already paying, I will throw my DSTV decoder into Jabi lake.

It shouldn't increase, is it not repeats we are watching? The entertainment industry is on lockdown so no new shows. So the increase is for repeat shows we have already watched. embarassed

Netflix is the way forward but data companies are thieves and will not offer a decent affordable fee for unlimited internet which is the most basic thing even in Ghana that this country looks down on.

They don't bear that burden rather they pass it to their subscribers. Why not protest to the government to halt it ?

You allow what ever treatment you get from others. Our Government can stand firm and say No not in the next 6-12 months at least let Nigerian earn about before tariffs increase.

Foreigners can maltreat Nigerians with consent from Nigerian leaders.

Government are making fortune from them so they don't really care about their services

As a person, the way it is, I am already fed up with their company with the repetition of many of their programs as if there are no new ones

Even the Indian movies, it's the same year in year out

If they are to show movies too especially on GOTV, it's the ones before the pre-colonial era, they will be showing

As in it's no longer funny

It's very boring

Perhaps their step will put the final icing on the cake

Na to pack their load keep for them or LAWMA as some are already doing!!!

DSTV is a privately owned enterprise.

Nothing stops you from establishing yours to compete.

Before you blame government, blame yourselves cos you people act like without Dstv and gotv... you would die... So why wouldn't they hike prices? You pay money continuously, every month for old shows that they put on auto repeat. Most of the series....you can all say the words in your sleep like you wrote the script. So if you stop making these idiots rich....by paying them monthly for their below mediocre shows...they wld drop d price. Stop coming here to complain, quit gotv... it's a simple solution.

The firm is an agent to the government on VAT collection so if the government halt the increment it is for the best. However the pay tv will not bear the burden should the government insist on VAT collection
