COVID-19: Governors Mandate calls on IGP to arrest Lockdown violators in Edo by GovsMandate: 8:28am On May 08, 2020 |
....as Nigeria Governors Raises Concern Over Breach The Governors expressed their worries over non-compliance of Inter-State lockdown order pronounced by President Buhari on 27th April, 2020 noting that movements have continued to occur between states even for persons who are not classified as essential workers. Chairman of the Forum, Governor Kayode Fayemi declared that the governors have therefore decided to strengthen security surveillance along borders by engendering stronger collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, as well as State chapters of the National Union of Road Transport Workers and local government officials. The NGF Chairman during the meeting of the NGF held on Thursday briefed State Governors on coordination efforts with the federal government, multilateral and bilateral partners, and the private sector through the Coalition against COVID-19 (CACOVID) to which governors expressed strong appreciation to the private sector coalition for the provision of palliatives to households and testing facilities to help curb the spread of the pandemic. The Forum also received an update from Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, who is heading the Committee that liaises with development partners in response to the fiscal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on States. In similar vein, the Governors Mandate Network has called on the Inspector General of Police to direct his Edo state Command to arrest some politicians who have been flouting the order of the President on the ban of inter-state movement. The Network noted that some reckless politicians of the All Progressives Congress in Edo state have been shuttling between Benin City and Abuja in the past few days without regard for the lockdown order or social distancing protocol for management of COVID-19. Earl Osaro Onaiwu who is the Chairman of the Network said those politicians, in their reckless schemes to grab power in the forthcoming governorship primaries have continued to expose the state to the threat of COVID-19 by moving about locations that have confirmed cases of the disease. He urged the police hierarchy not to delay in moving to contain these desperate politicians since common sense does not appeal to them that only the living can play politics. Ha also advised that Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the APC be cautioned against encouraging the risky behaviour being perpetrated by his loyalists.
