WE have followed with the keen interest the situation in Kano state as regards the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in the state vis a vis the response by the state government and other concerned stakeholders.

When the reports came of mysterious deaths in Kano, it does not require special medical skills to know that the deaths might not be unconnected with the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic. Amidst denial by the state that the deaths were as a results of other causes, the state recorded more high death rate within three weeks. The Presidential Task Force delegation sent to investigate the situations in Kano has since confirmed that the deaths were indeed caused by coronavirus.
We have also noted claims of supports and donations by individuals and institutions to the Kano state government towards containing the virus. Of note is the donation by Alhaji Abdulsamad Rabiu, the chairman of BUA, the Presidential Task Force and Alhaji Aliko Dangote.

The public space has also been awash with claims of donation of N2 billion cash, 20 Hillux vans worth N200million and Five ambulances worth N100million by Alhaji Rabiu. Also Alhaji Dangote through his Aliko Dangote Foundation handed over fully completed multimillion naira special 54gene testing laboratory which capable of conducting 1000 test per day and 10 ambulances.

As concerned citizens we are pained by the rising cases of Covid-19 and have therefore been monitoring all issues surrounding the Pandemic, efforts being made by stakeholders as well as the response so far by the state government led by Alhaji Abdulahi Umar Ganduje.

While some of the medical equipment donated by various parties are being put into use to help our people recover from the sickness, we make bold to ask what has happened to some of the donations especially the N2billion cash support by the BUA Chairman, including the N5billion announced by CNN.

And just as many are saying, we believe that given the enormity of supports and donations from individuals, institutions and federal government, the state ought to fair better in tackling the menace of coronavirus pandemic, except the donations are mere “audio donations.” Ganduje should speak out now. For the sake of accountability and transparency, it is our candid advice that the executive governor should make public the authentic donations, both in cash and material support.
