Since it was first detected in Wuhan, China in December 2019, coronavirus (COVID-19) has ravaged through the world with social and economic impact that will be felt for years.

As of May 12, 2020, there are over 4,393,193 infected with over 295,445 deaths recorded around the world.

More than 1.6 million people have also recovered from the virus, declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Nigeria has had its fair share of the global crisis with 4,787 confirmed cases, and 158 deaths (as of May 12).


TiMELINE

As announced by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), below is a timeline of coronavirus cases in Nigeria:

February 27 – A 44-year old Italian man is announced as Nigeria’s index case. Total – 1 case.

March 8 – One of the Italian’s contacts in Ogun tested positive. Total – 2 cases.

March 16 – A 30-year old Nigerian woman who returned from the United Kingdom on March 13 tested positive in Lagos. Total – 3 cases.

March 18 – 5 cases recorded in Lagos and Ekiti. Total – 8 cases.

March 19 – 4 new cases recorded in Lagos. Total – 12 cases.

March 21 – 10 new cases recorded in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory. Total – 22 cases.

March 22 – 8 new cases recorded in Lagos, FCT, and Oyo. Total – 30 cases.

March 23 – 10 new cases recorded in Lagos, FCT, and Edo. Total – 40 cases.

March 23 – Nigeria records first coronavirus death – Suleiman Achimugu, a former managing director of the Pipeline and Product Marketing Company (PPMC).

March 24 – 4 cases were recorded in Lagos, FCT, Ogun, and Bauchi. Bauchi case is state governor, Bala Mohammed.

March 25 – 7 new cases recorded in Lagos, FCT, Osun, and Rivers.

March 26 – 14 new cases confirmed in Lagos, Bauchi, and FCT.

March 27 – 16 new cases recorded in Lagos, FCT, Oyo, Edo, and Enugu.

March 28 – 16 new cases recorded in Lagos, FCT, Oyo, Osun, Benue, and Kaduna. The case in Kaduna is the state governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

March 29 – 14 new cases recorded in Lagos and FCT.

March 30 – 1 new death recorded. Patient had severe underlying illnesses.

March 30 – 20 new cases recorded in Lagos, FCT, Kaduna, and Oyo. Oyo’s case is state governor, Seyi Makinde.

March 31 – 8 new cases recorded in Lagos, FCT, Osun and Ogun.

April 1 – 35 new cases recorded in Lagos, FCT, Akwa Ibom, Kaduna and Bauchi.

April 2 – 10 new cases recorded in Lagos and FCT.

April 3 – 25 new cases recorded in Lagos, FCT, Edo, Oyo, Ondo.

April 3 – 2 new deaths recorded in Lagos and Edo.

April 4 – 5 new cases recorded in Bauchi and FCT.

April 5 – 18 new cases recorded in Lagos, FCT, Kaduna, and Edo.

April 5 – One new death recorded in Lagos.

April 6 – 6 new cases recorded in Edo, Rivers, FCT, and Kwara.

April 7 – 16 new cases recorded in Lagos, FCT, Oyo, Delta, and Katsina.

April 30 - 204 new cases recorded in 18 states. They are Kano, Lagos, Gombe, Bauchi, Sokoto, Borno, Edo, Ogun, Rivers, FCT, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Kaduna, Oyo, Delta, Nasarawa, Ondo and Kebbi.

May 1 - 238 new cases recorded in 22 states. They are Kano, FCT, Lagos, Gombe, Bauchi, Delta, Oyo, Sokoto, Zamfara, Ondo, Nasarawa, Borno, Edo, Kwara, Ekiti, Yobe, Adamawa, Rivers, Enugu, Ebonyi, Niger and Imo. Total Cases - 2,170.

May 2 - 220 new cases recorded in 19 states. They are Lagos, FCT, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, Yobe, Borno, Bauchi, Edo, Gombe, Oyo, Enugu, Zamfara, Kano, Osun, Kwara, Nasarawa, Ebonyi and Plateau. Total Cases - 2,388.

May 3 - 170 new cases recorded in 12 states. They are Lagos, Kano, Ogun, Bauchi, Kaduna, FCT, Sokoto, Katsina, Borno, Nasarawa, Adamawa and Oyo. Total Cases - 2,558.

May 4 - 245 new cases recorded in 16 states. They are Lagos, Katsina, Jigawa, Kano, FCT, Borno, Edo, Bauchi, Adamawa, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Zamfara, Ekiti, Niger and Benue. Total Cases - 2,802.

May 5 - 148 new cases recorded in 17 states. They are Lagos, Kano, Zamfara, FCT, Katsina, Taraba, Borno, Ogun, Oyo, Kaduna, Bauchi, Edo, Gombe, Adamawa, Sokoto, Kebbi and Plateau. Total Cases - 2,950.

May 6 - 195 new cases recorded in 13 states. They are Lagos, Kano, Zamfara, Sokoto, Borno, FCT, Oyo, Gombe, Kebbi, Ogun, Katsina, Kaduna and Adamawa. Total Cases - 3,145.

May 7 - 381 new cases recorded in 18 states. They are Lagos, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Zamfara, Katsina, Borno, Kwara, Kaduna, Gombe, Ogun, Sokoto, Oyo, Rivers, Niger, Akwa Ibom, Enugu and Plateau. Total Cases - 3,526.

May 8 - 386 new cases recorded in 20 states. They are Lagos, Kano, Katsina, FCT, Borno, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Ogun, Plateau, Sokoto, Oyo, Rivers, Kaduna, Edo, Ondo, Ebonyi, Gombe, Osun, Enugu and Imo. Total Cases - 3,912.

May 9 - 239 new cases recorded in 15 states. They are Lagos, Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, Borno, FCT, Kwara, Oyo, Kaduna, Sokoto, Ogun, Kebbi, Adamawa, Plateau and Ekiti. Total Cases - 4,151.

May 10 - 248 new cases recorded in 17 states. They are Lagos, Jigawa, Kano, Borno, Bauchi, FCT, Edo, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kwara, Kebbi, Ogun, Gombe, Taraba, Ekiti, Osun and Bayelsa. Total Cases - 4,399.

May 11 - 242 new cases recorded in 14 states. They are Lagos, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Ogun, Gombe, Adamawa, FCT, Borno, Bauchi, Zamfara, Oyo, Rivers and Ondo. Total Cases - 4,641.

May 12 - 146 new cases recorded in 20 states. They are Lagos, Kano, Kwara, Edo, Bauchi, Yobe, Oyo, Kebbi, Katsina, Niger, Borno, Sokoto, Plateau, Benue, FCT, Ogun, Gombe, Rivers, Enugu and Ebonyi. Total Cases - 4,787.
