Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state and his counterpart in Ondo state , Rotimi Akeredolu on Monday said they are ready for the conduct of the governorship elections which will take place in the two states later this year.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had in February fixed 19th of September 2020 and 10th of October 2020 for Edo and Ondo states respectively.

In the timetable for the election activities for Edo State governorship election, the commission stated that the conduct of primary election and resolution of disputes arising from primaries would be between 2nd of June to 27th of June while campaign would kick-start on the 21st of June. 17th of September was fixed for the end of campaign in the state, in line with Section 99(1) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

For Ondo State, the commission fixed 2nd of July to 25th of July for the conduct of primary election and resolution of disputes arising from primaries “to enable political parties democratically nominate candidates for the election as required by Section 87 of the Electoral Act 2010.”

The electoral commission fixed 8th of October for the end of the campaign while the election would be on the 10th of October. Expectedly, political activities peaked in the two states as aspirants and political parties went about wooing the voters ahead of the elections.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic ravaging the country which has shown no sign of abating, INEC said that there is no going back on the conduct of both Edo and Ondo States gubernatorial elections in order to avert constitutional crisis.

Despite INEC’s insistence, there are concerns among stakeholders especially among the supporters of the governors who believe they may not have ample time to prepare for the elections given the fact that they are busy combating the spread of COVID-19 in their states.

However, speaking with our correspondent, Paul Ohonbamu, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation in Edo said Governor Obaseki is prepared for the election anyday it is conducted.

According to him, the governor has performed creditably well in his first term and he Is confident the people of Edo will renew his mandate for another four years come September 19.

“COVID-19 is everywhere. No one knows when it will end. Maybe eventually it will be like one of the previous plagues that we now have to live with”.

“As for the election, even if it’s two months time or next month, Governor Godwin Obaseki is ready. We have done our job, we have served Edo people and they are ready to renew his mandate and vote him back for another four years because he has worked”.

“Honour can be purchased only by your deeds. Governor Obaseki has done what is expected of him”.

“He has fulfilled and even surpassed all the promises he made to the people in the areas of job creation, education, health, infrastructure and in all sectors. He has created jobs for youths and turned them into breadwinners unlike before when they were beggars of bread”.

“In terms of his performance, he remains very fine and sure-footed even when the election comes anytime, we are confident that by the grace of God, he will get the people’s mandate again” the Commissioner said.

On his part, Governor Akeredolu, who spoke through Ojo Oyewamide, his

Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media and Publicity said he was set for any date agreed upon by INEC and he is confident of winning.

“Mr. Governor has no discretion to deploy in respect of any election; that of Ondo State inclusive. He is set for the date and good to win” he said in a text message to our correspondent.

Imagine governors saying that they are ready to contest with ordinary civillians over the seats they currently occur.

You see, the biggest lacuna in democracy is expecting people to be in a position and contesting for the same position.

How on earth do you expect them to lose when they have access to security and state resources?
