Need To Call Government Out On Spending 643 Million For 1200 Computers by omonnakoda: 3:28pm On May 20, 2020 |
Lai Mohamed announced plans to buy 1200 Desktop Computers for the Customs st 643 million Naira This works out at 643 000 000 1200 = 535 833 Naira for one desktop nearly $1500 Is this realistic One would expect if you are spending that amount tou would get a discount and this seems highly inflated The article mentioned printers without details https://punchng.com/breaking-fec-approves-n623m-for-customs-to-buy-computers/ |

Maybe a marketer has told them the computers can think and bring out reasonable and workable ideas, since they can't do so themselves. The other day, one official bought uncompleted building for billions. Nigerian government just has a way of making mockery in their budget and report of expenditures! Corruption reigns supreme! What could any government parastatal possibly need such high grade and expensive PCs for? Abi them don dey do 3d Animation and Data Mining? 2 Likes |

It’s a shame that so many uninformed people are here on Nairaland. A little google search for the cost of say HP core i7 desktop with dedicated graphics cost way above $1200 which is also dependent on the included memory (e.g. 16gb). I have not added shipping fees. When a contractor supplies such equipment, they get their commission for work done or don’t they deserve to be paid? Again when you do government contracts , your money is not paid immediately( come today come tomorrow sets in ) If we factor all theses things together, the contract sum released for 1200 computers is fair. 1 Like 1 Share |

You are daft What stops the government buying direct from manufacturers Do you imagine any business buying 1200 computers will buy at the inter quoted price? No retailer stock 1200 desktops. Why do they need that particular spec you quoted and who told you that is the spec they are buying Is buying 1200 units of desktop computers an optimal solution In your eyes you have made sense 1 Like |

Gandollar:Do not mind the fool Anyone buying 1200 computers is a big customer. No retailer keeps that in stock and few governments if any buy desktops this days. You can get decent desktops with screens for under $400 The other issue is security. Should a sensitive department like Customs buy computers from just anyone Workstations which are more powerful are very cheap these days |

Were you not the one that will be quick to bring Nzeogwu or Zik anytime the Igbos mention restructuring or Biafra? If you refused to support restructuring or Biafra by drawing fallacious hypothesis how Igbos ruined it in the first place hence should not be allowed now, are you then not overtly or covertly supporting one Nigeria?Like I said you lamentations just began...why did you form Amotekun? You created a thread on a public forum to lament about the corruption in Bubu's govt. You know this Nigeria project has failed but out of spite for Igbos you prefer to flog a dead horse. You will also defend Tinubu's corruption but pretending to dislike corruption! Anybody that supports the unjust sharing of Niger Delta resources like you is a fraud! There's a big chance that a sharp practice is being incubated in this contract. But even if there's none, whatever the government does is suspect because of other bad deals they've gotten themselves into before. But to be fair, many people in IT sector can bear witness that a standard computer befitting of a security conscious department like the Nigerian customs will be in the neighborhood of $1,200 - $1,700 per unit. Now, sane but slightly insignificant arguments like direct labor (boycotting contractors) and purchasing cheaper computers were raised. These arguments are not bad but the downside is that the government may end purchasing the wrong components as some of these contracts involves experts who also do the installation. The other downside is that cheap computers will most unlikely do the kind of work it's needed for in a security sensitive and fast pace department like customs. The solution has always been on the table: 1. Develop/produce or die. Nigeria even when we rightly purchase goods like this. We will keep spending huge amounts of money on stuff like this yearly. The government must provide an enabling environment for mass (even if not quality) production for most of what we need. You save these millions and fx by this act. 2. Nigeria must ensue merits, passion and character in their civil service recruitment process. With this, you don't need to contract an external body to buy and install these gadgets. Again, it saves money and protects the system from an outside attack. Singapore, China and some Nordic countries has perfected this act. From their science labs, aerospace, oil... These countries employ and manages their best brains in them, and they are reaping the benefits massively. Again develop/manufacture or we will keep discussing this topic every other year when it's time to make another purchase from HP. 1 Like |

clintz:I bought my Mac for 980k, but i can bet anything that they won't buy a computer that is up to that. They don't need it. Does the Nigeria Custom Service program? Are they running android studio? Most of the Softwares they use doesn't consume much RAM. |
Re: Need To Call Government Out On Spending 643 Million For 1200 Computers by omonnakoda: 11:20pm On May 20, 2020 |
Upworkwriter007:You bought yours from a retailer . Anyone buying 1200 can buy direct from the manufacturer removing distributorsand dealers. No retailer will keep that kind of stock . So they should be able to negotiate half the retail price or less even. Have you any idea the wholesale of these things add overhead cost and profit BY the way what is the advantage of Mac systems TO justify the cost? |
