It's been a perfect season for agoraphobes and sociophobes while the claustrophobic have had a nightmarish experience.

"'The good, the bad and the uglies' of physical distancing cum socially distant, then altogether lock up and stay at home."

We all have periods when we feel the best, experience has taught us that there are situations which provide us with enough inner strength to see things through and we have come to believe that self is sufficient to pull through them. However, with novel occurrences, whomever can truly ever be prepared for them?

The coronavirus epidemic turned pandemic came at the worst of times for many. The world was only grasping at the new year with financial predictions and tradings only easing into gear when it struck. The Far East had been battling the virus prior but the majority of the world was consumed with their own affairs until it swung in like a storm, seemingly one country and region at a time and viola! We were all knee deep in its quick sand.

Two months in, and the world has never been so different, so shaken, so mellow and so on the precipice of a collective unity. Nations look on at the examples of their neighbours from far and nearby hoping they could learn from their confrontations with the pandemic and apply such knowledge to good use but the numbers have not been encouraging by any means; one could state it has only been the case of taking a step forward then three backwards for many a country.

Announcements of daily cases floods the dailies, with internet bloggers busily updating the stat sheets, nothing else seems to really make the news except where provisions are being shared to ease the growing tensions or palliatives in the form of monies slated to be distributed elsewhere. Humanity has been driven to the basic need to *survive* — feed for the day and look on in the hopes of surviving tomorrow. The scenes on the streets are akin to that of a zombie Hollywood movie, World War Z for instance, with major freeways deserted and the only distinction being that we do not get to see the brain-eating cadavers traipsing along the culverts and sidewalks of those roads. The inspiration behind those kind of movies has never been so aptly felt than now: we are practically living in The Walking Dead/Warm Bodies.

Psychologists hitherto classified us into social forms, or conditions, aided by varying preferences — the agoraphobes/epistolophobes who repel from clusters of people and spaces; the claustrophobes who lose their minds in shut-in spaces; those who feel a pulse of life when they go on shopping sprees and others with varying peevishnesses. Each and every of these groups have been at the receiving end of the ongoing happenings worldwide. No one is exempted but theirs has been intriguing from a scientific standpoint as one would imagine if there have been recorded cases of emergencies to the clinics/hospitals because a patient could no longer breathe or suddenly grew unresponsive only for consultations by the physician to reveal that he/she was a claustrophobe!

Ergo, have there been any death recorded from such peculiar patients or was the entire psychological detailing of such phenomena just a hodgepodge of bollocks informing us that psychologists were working? I wonder how many other self-proclaimed fields of study have given us near-truths all in a guise to appear knowledgeable and moving with the times! How much more lies have we been fed over the years by those using humanity to make a buck here and there, defining things which do not truly exist and claiming to know how to treat those phantom conditions in a heartbeat only for the patient to keep weekly appointments with the specialist paying outrageous fees in the process!

Invariably, the advent of change always brings with it a new seed of thought, a fresh introspective rush which could herald discarding previously held views, providing man with a better grasp of the world around him and also a deeper understanding of himself. This year has been one auspicious and unraveling harbinger of what is to come, and I daresay any one man can accurately forecast where the world will be post the corona pandemic. As the days go by, and we get to adapt a little more to the changes in our world, who's to say when all this goes away we would go back to business as usual? We just might prefer the ebbing nascent to the faucet origio.
