The Coronavirus or SARS-Cov-2 is the pathogen responsible for the Covid-19 disease which infects the human lungs causing severe lower respiratory complications characterized by symptoms such as coughing, fever, shortness of breadth, pneumonia and in severe cases; organ failure which leads to death of an infected individual (patient). There is an increasing risk factor or chances of becoming infected by the virus, this has prompted the World Health Organization and many National Center For Disease Control to declare an emergency (Covid-19 Pandemic) in response to the need of controlling the spread of the Coronavirus and its associated disease.
The Coronavirus spreads from person to person mainly through the droplets produced when an infected person speaks, coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land on the mouth, noses or eyes (the T-zone of the face) of people who are nearby. The Coronavirus cannot travel too far in air – it only travels about one meter and then quickly settles on surfaces. This is the reason why person to person spread of the virus happens to be more prevalent and our focus in preventing the Covid-19.
The prevention of spread of the Coronavirus (Or Covid-19) will most primarily be effective with a change in our physical habits which permits movement of the disease from person to persons and from surfaces to persons. Below are top 10 effective tips which I recommend we religiously adhere to, so as to prevent and protect both ourselves and our families from the Coronavirus disease.

1. Maintain Social Distancing:
It is advised by leading health experts that proper distancing of about 6ft (ie 2meters) should be given when in contact with other people, who may be potential carriers of the virus. Since the Coronavirus cannot travel in air at a maximum distance of about 6ft, it remains the primary and an effective approach to breaking the line of transmission of virus from person to person.
2. Washing of Hands Frequently:
Clean hand hygiene is very important in stopping the spread of the Coronavirus from surfaces or person to person. This is because the hand can easily introduce the virus into the body via touching of the eyes, touching of the nose and mouth. To effectively wash the hand we must use running water and soap. Washing the hands must be done thoroughly with scrubbing every single part of the hands including the palm, back of hands, around the nails, in-between the fingers, wrists and the thumbs, for a period of about 20 seconds (same time as singing the ‘Happy Birthday' song).
3. Use of Alcohol-Based Hand Solutions:
In maintaining good hand hygiene, the use of alcohol based hand sanitizers is highly important, especially when you get in contact with surfaces and your hands are not visibly unclean. Hand sanitizers that are effective must have an alcoholic content of more than 70%. They work well since they can enter into cervices of the hand and kill the virus pathogens. One must ensure that an adequate amount is poured into the hands to achieve full result.
There are other alcohol based products for this same purpose, such as the hand wipes, but this may not be advisable since they tend to spread the virus all over the hands, as such, we are advised to use the liquid sanitizers instead.
4. Avoid Touching Your T-Zones:
The face should be considered as a very sacred part of our body because it contains the very site of entry of the virus into the human body. The nose, eyes and mouth are the very potential entry points of the virus into the body. They are known as the T-zone of the face by scientists, who advise that we should take high precautions and discipline in avoiding things like rubbing of our eyes, touching of our mouths when trying to turn a book page, or picking of our nose for the fun of it etc. This habits been curtailed would prevent any transfer of the Coronavirus into our internal body system.
5. Avoid Crowded Places:
Due to the high possibility of getting infected with the Coronavirus via close contact with an infected person; It is advisable to avoid crowded places such as during panic buying spree in open or super markets, crusade grounds, clustered means of transportation (buses, planes, ships) and every other possible locations where the principle of social distancing would be ignorantly violated.
6. Catching Your Coughs and Sneezes:
The Coronavirus primarily spreads through droplets ejected from our mouths and nose when we cough or sneeze. To protect other people from becoming infected, we are encouraged to stop the movement of these fluid droplets from our body through 3 ways.
One, we are advised to use a disposable tissue paper to catch our coughs and sneezes, and properly dispose of them into a safe container. Two, in the case of not having any available tissue, we are advised to cough into a bent elbow (using the 'Dab' sign). More importantly, we are encouraged to wear a protective face mask which effectively reduces the amount of fluid released into the air when we cough or sneeze.
7. Setting-Up Home Decontamination Section:
Protecting our family on the home-front is very vital and so the need to set up a mini decontamination area, just in front of your house or workplace (point of entry). In this section, necessary items will be provided to disinfect anyone who is entering the house after making contact with people outside. It will contain items such as a water (especially in a large can), bleach, Lysol (sanitizers), gloves, facemasks, towels, shoe bin, waste baskets, etc. Every individual (visitors or family members) will be expected to first wash their hands, and if possibly put on the necessary protective gears (face masks and gloves) or change shoe wears or clothing materials that might be a potential carrier of the Covid-19 pathogens. Strict adherence must be placed to protect every members of the family from possible Coronavirus infection.
8. Cleaning Up of Surfaces (Avoid touching):
Cleaning of all surfaces in the home can be an effective way of preventing the spread of Coronavirus from person to person amongst members of our families. This is essential especially if there is a suspected case of the Covid-19 in a member of the household (who should be isolated).
Also, it is important we learn not to touch open surfaces directly, especially in public places. Such surfaces could be door knobs, handles of different things, stair rails, elevator buttons etc. These surfaces could potentially hold the Coronavirus, which can survive for days on these surfaces, thus infecting unknowing passer-by who use or touch them.
We should always wash our hands with soap and water (at the decontamination area) after going out to public places, to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus on surfaces in our homes.
9. Build Your Immunity (and that of your family members):
The body has a very strong defense system which is capable of protecting us from the Coronavirus and its bad effect. Since there is no cure to the virus, covid-19 cases receive medical support that aims at strengthening the body immunity against the virus. That is basically how Covid-19 Patients in the hospitals survive. So, it is important to ensure we build our own immune system (and that of every members of our family) by eating regularly a balanced diet, which should be adequately supplied to all members of the family, especially the aged and young ones.
Constant intake of vitamin rich food will help boost our body immunity against the virus. Supplements of Vitamin D is sometimes advised by health experts, also daily routine exercises and constant monitoring of our temperatures to check for any significant temperature increase should be encouraged. Body temperature monitoring could detect a possible Coronavirus fever. Proper cooking of animal products and groceries is also advised.
10. Stay At Home If You Feel Unwell:
It is very important we remain home in a situation where we feel like we have become infected or when we start to show symptoms like difficulty in breathing, high fever or persistent coughing. It is not advised to go to the hospital right away, but to call the relevant authorities or covid-19 help lines which is available in every country. This is to protect others from possible infection. The needed authorities when contacted would most likely send a special conveyance vehicle that would ensure you are given proper care.
Other members of the family of an infected person during this period of waiting must ensure a safe distance from the infected person (except the direct care giver who should use a facemask and gloves), should avoid sharing the same eating utensils, dishes, drinks and towels with the infected person, should properly cough and sneeze as described above, must all be regularly monitored with home first aid kits (like thermometers etc) for any symptoms of the Coronavirus disease.
Finally, it is important to adhere to instructions given or set by relevant government authorities or health parastatals during the period of the covid-19 Pandemic.
