Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun announced on Thursday that the government will extend the lockdown which was imposed in the state to weekend alone. Before now, the lockdown was partially lifted on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday while the curfew remained in place.

Residents in the state who are Christians have complained about the directives of the governor and they accused him of favouring the Muslims in the state. The latest order which was announced on Thursday further gave credence to the myriads of complaints from the Christian faithful in the state.

Recall that the first COVID-19 case in Nigeria was traced to Ewekoro, a town in Ogun State. The governor announced that 109 patients of COVID-19 have thus far recovered while 133 active cases are currently being treated in all the isolation centers in the state and nine deaths have been recorded.

When Diaspora Reporters contacted a leader of a Christian association in Abeokuta, the man who didn’t want his name to be mentioned stated that the governor came up with the weekend lockdown order because he is afraid of the crowd that gathers at Canaan Land (Winners Chapel) and the majority of those who attends the church are from Lagos, the epicenter of the virus. A lady who also shared her opinion opined that the governor wants to demonstrate that he has the power to give executive order being the commander in chief of the state and all church figures must obey his command.

Recall that Bishop David Oyedepo has insisted that there is a motive behind the continued shutting of churches. He compared the scenario to the markets and other places where the lockdown has been lifted

The founder of a big denomination in Nigeria allegedly told his members that he is going to defile the state government lockdown order if the government refused to lift the ban on religious gathering at a given date which he told them.
