Joseph Amoubi, a Nigerian man murdered in Qawra earlier this year, will finally be laid to rest in Malta with the €6,000 raised to repatriate his body being put towards supporting his young widowed wife and their infant son.

The young father was murdered in his apartment in Qawra after an argument with an apartment-mate got out of hand; heartbreakingly, his wife Harmony was giving birth to their first child hours around the same time as his death.

Harmony even called to give Amoubi the good news… only to be told her husband was dead, murdered by a friend.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Malta’s local and Nigerian community decided to come together to raise funds to help get his body back home and support the young family.

A €6,000 goal was set, and within weeks they managed to raise €4,481 from an online campaign and €1,250 in contributions from the Maltese community. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, expensive cross-continent transportation proved to be a major stumbling block in repatriating Joseph’s body.

Lovin Malta was informed that Joseph will now be buried in Malta instead, which will cost around €2,000. The rest of the money raised will go towards supporting wife and child. Before any money is transferred, fundraisers wanted to inform anyone who donated to make sure they’re comfortable with the change in plans.

Repatriation is often a challenging task with the body of Lassana Cisse also yet to return home and be granted a proper burial, a year on from the shocking Ħal Far murder.
