The Bank Verification Number commonly referred to as BVN is a biometric identification system implemented by the Central Bank of Nigeria to curb/reduce illegal banking transactions in Nigeria. The federal government of Nigeria had through the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN, mandated all bank account holders to adopt and get registered on the BVN platform

BVN issues are common in today's Nigerian banking system, and these issues need to be fixed to allowing you avail of some banking services. We have highlighted below some of the prominent BVN issues faced by Nigerians and the solutions:

IRREGULAR NAMES IN DIFFERENT BANK ACCOUNT: This usually applies if the name on various bank accounts differs from each other. The essence of BVN is to unite all accounts owned by a customer with a single name pattern, thus the need to standardize your name across the different bank accounts.

Solution: You will require an affidavit showing that both names belong to the same person. The new name must be published in a national newspaper, as required by law, to effect the unification.

WRONG DATE OF BIRTH: Just like the irregular names, account holders must unify their date of birth across all their bank accounts.

Solution: You are required to produce an ID card, affidavit with the correct date of birth and birth certificate (in some cases).

CHANGE OF NAME AS A RESULT OF MARRIAGE: This applies to women who take on their husband's last name after the wedding. The woman has an option of converting her account name to her new name or opening a new account under the new last name. Often, most women prefer to change their name on their bank account rather than opening a new one.

Solution: A marriage certificate and newspaper publication are required to effect the change on the bank account. You can provide an affidavit if the marriage certificate isn't available. You may also be required to provide an ID card in some cases.
