Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, on Thursday, vowed not to register in the ongoing voter registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission if the electoral body failed to stabilise the exercise.

Obi lamented the shortage of the Direct Data Capture machine in his state. According to him, Anambra State still require about 800 units of the machines for the exercise to run smoothly.

The governor spoke when he received the Political and Economic Chief at the US Consulate-General office, Lagos, Mr. Phil Drown, at the Government House, Awka.

He said that he had made his observation known to INEC.

He listed other problems associated with the exercise to include malfunctioning machines, battery problems and low picture quality.

But he said he would not call for the extension of the period provided for the exercise, saying that INEC would first need to do an appraisal of the situation before any call for extension could be made.

“Whatever it is, we must encourage our people to come out en masse to register so that they will have a say on who govern them at various levels. This is one clear way of restoring integrity to leadership because the people will vote for those they are sure of their competence and character,” the governor said.

Also, a former Vice-Chancellor of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Pita Ejiofor, expressed doubts as to whether the registration of voters would be completed before the January 29 deadline.

“It is clear that the problem can be traced to inept operation of DDCMs by some officials; defects in some DDCMs, power supply problems; defective/uncharged batteries and more.

“I witnessed the problem of difficulty/failure to capture finger prints. Many village folks attribute it to shortage of blood,” he said.

Ejiofor suggested the suspension of the exercise for one week during which a comprehensive check of all the machines and retraining of all the registration personnel would be carried out.
