Global economic growth could rebound next year but the number of people living in extreme poverty is expected to remain unchanged after a huge surge this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the World Bank warned Tuesday.

The bank said three countries (India – 24%, Nigeria – 12%, DR Congo – 7%) with the highest shares of the world’s extremely poor are not projected to grow faster than their population, meaning that extreme poverty will remain at the elevated 2020 levels through 2021.

The projection came after the Washington-based development lender said Monday the pandemic could drive between 70 and 100 million people into extreme poverty in 2020 as the global economy faces its worst recession in 80 years.

Before the pandemic, extreme poverty – defined as living on $1.90 per day – had been decreasing.

The bank expects growth to rebound by four percent in 2021.

“Nigeria, India and the Democratic Republic of Congo — three countries which we project are home to more than a third of the world’s poor – are predicted to have per-capita growth rates in real GDP of –0.8 percent, 2.1 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively.

“With population growth rates of 2.6 percent, 1.0 percent and 3.1 percent, this is hardly enough for sustainable decreases in the poverty headcount,” the World Bank said in a blog.

The bank warned “South Asia may see a larger increase in the number of poor as a result of COVID-19,” particularly in India.

Of the 176 million people expected to be pushed below the $3.20 per-day poverty line, two-thirds are in South Asia.

President Buhari, we are grateful. grin I bless the day you were sworn in as president of this great country. You're indeed the best thing that has happened to Nigeria since independence. "Buhari" should be added to the English dictionary to mean prosperity.
I pray God blesses you, your family and your generations to come the way you've blessed and changed the lives of Nigerians at large. (Amen) . May the rewards of your administration locate the Patriots who voted you in .They truly should be proud of themselves. cheesy

God bless Nigeria
Buhari beyond 2023

That's perfectly correct,if the world's population is 7 billion and lets agree that the poor in the said population is is 2 billion and 43% of 2 billion is about 860 million, nigeria population is said to be 250 million,With the above analysis,it is quite clear that all nigerians 're poor except our: @ past and present president, governors, senators, members of house of representatives, heads of government ministries, agencies, parastatals.government cronies and fronts. this number is not up to ten percent of our population. An average nigerian virtualy eats from the dustbin and also live below human habitation.

You are obviously not good with maths. What do you mean by 35% lives in the north?

FYI, Northern Nigeria is the real poverty capital of the world. They house as much as 70% of that figure for Nigeria! And at the rate they are organizing mass weddings and giving birth like rats, they will soon have 50% of the world's poor living in Northern Nigeria.

The number reason why I support the breakup of Nigeria is because these northerners are on a self destruct mode and as they continue today sink into the bottomless pit they dug for themselves, they want to drag others down the abyss along with them.

With Boko Haram, fulani herdsmen AKA bandits and several other terrorist groups, including those that are still at incubation stage, coupled with a laid-back attitude to life while mass procreating, you don't need a soothsayer to tell you that winter is coming.

If don't cut these guys loose as soon as possible, we will sink with them!

You are completely wrong, Even before mention me (Because i will instantly come with authentic Credible stats and data), Check the Ratio of Poor vs Total population, also Total number of Poors as well.

The main problem of this Black race is "We never accepts the mistakes and never acknowledge the Truth". No wonder we are the most unproductive people on this planet.

Instead of posting anecdotes post the authentic credible stats and data to rebuff the stats of the original post.

I’m not wrong because according to the link in the OP India has the highest rate of extremely poor people with 24% compared to Nigeria’s 12%
