The clash between the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki has taken a new dimension ahead of the screening of the aspirants for the party's governorship ticket.

There were reports of moves to disqualify Obaseki during the screening of aspirants over some alleged glaring discrepancies in his certificate which are yet to be spotted and made public. The APC made public details of the aspirants' certificates and other credential last Monday. Yet, those behind the moves to disqualify Obaseki are yet to specify the alleged glaring discrepancies in his certificates.

But, Oshiomhole has openly doubted the genuineness of the first degree certificate presented by Obaseki from the University of Ibadan (UI). While inaugurating the screening and appeal committees for the Edo APC primary in Abuja, Oshiomhole raised suspicion over the authenticity of Obaseki's first degree certificate. In fact, Oshiomhole has taken the matter very serious to the extent that he said if the authenticity of the certificate was not ascertained, it could cost the party its chances.

To this end, Oshiomhole tasked the screening committee to go the extra mile to verify the certificate from the University of Ibadan where the Governor claims he obtained it from. He directed the panel to do a due diligence because the National Working Committee (NWC) led by him would be blamed if any mistake is made in very important matters that could affect the party's chances of victory. Oshiomhole also revealed that he doubts if Obaseki actually passed senate screening of the UI. He wondered how the UI allowed Obsseki then when the he (Obaseki) never knew he would become a Governor. According to the APC National Chairman, everybody no matter their family status was mandated to go through and pass the senate screening. But, he doubts if Obaseki did that neither did he believe the Governor did a remedial course and passed it to gain admission.

So, more digging has to be done to confirm if the certificate presented by Obaseki is authentic. Oshiomhole then saddled the screening committee with the additional task of doing the finding based on the doubts surrounding Obaseki's certificate. The committee is also to verify the certificates and other credentials presented by the other five aspirants vying for the APC governorship ticket for Edo State. Oshiomhole revealed that the due diligence becomes very imperative following the lessons the APC learnt from the loss it suffered in Bayelsa State.

He said that the party lost because the Deputy Governorship candidate presented a questionable certificate. Recall that the opposition took advantage of that and won the party in court despite APC's initial victory. Eventually, the governorship candidates of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Duoye Diri and his Deputy, Lawrence Ewrudjakpor were sworn in after the Supreme Court sacked David Lyon and his running mate, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo.

But Obaseki did not keep quiet at all these that Oshiomhole said. Obaseki still insists that Oshiomhole and the APC can go on to verify his certificate from the UI. This is not the first time Obaseki is challenging anybody doubting the authenticity of his certificate to go on and verify it. He has said that nobody can forge UI's certificate easily. Let alone a person of his status. Speaking through his aide on Media and Communications, Crusoe Osagie, Obaseki insisted that the University of Ibadan awarded him a BA degree in Classical Studies as far back as 1979.

Crusuo added that it is worthy of note that Obaseki was among an elite corps of illustrious alumni of the university to deliver a national alumni lecture in August 2018. Will someone who is not an alunus be among the alumni to deliver a national lecture in the name of the university? That is a very deep question. Will UI allow someone who was not its student to take part in a lecture meant for only its alumni?

Governor Obaseki and his supporters believe that Oshiomhole has a personal interest in the matter and would be looking for any means possible to get Obaseki out of the race. It is still a common knowledge that Obaseki and Oshiomhole are involved in a fierce superiority clash which has defied all efforts to settle. Even APC Governors could not settle them. A visit to the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu hoping that his intervention would settle the two politicians has not settled the matter. Although, Tinubu did not make his position known on the issue. He may still intervene or even choose to be neutral. President Muhammadu Buhari was as well visited over the issue. His position is still unknown. Could it be he chose to remain neutral too?

The truth is that Oshiomhole and Obaseki have carried on with their clash and it could affect the APC primary and even the party's chances in the main election. Already, Edo APC has two factions. One loyal is to Oshiomhole and the other is loyal to Obaseki. It is a fact that Oshiomhole is not supporting Obaseki. In fact, Obaseki is alleging that Oshiomhole is doing everything possible to stop him from winning the primary and to favour another aspirant to beat him. There were feelers that Oshiomhole is backing Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Now, with the way things are going, how will it end for the APC? Although, the finding of the screening committee on Obaseki's certificate will determine a lot of things. But signs are that the APC screening and primary election if not well handled may affect the party's chances. This is so especially with the insinuations that there is a plot to disqualify Obaseki from the race for APC Governorship ticket. Nobody should be neglected because the least expected person can do something beyond the party's expectation is underrated.

The University of Ibadan (UI) has confirmed that Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki graduated from the institution in 1979 with a Second Class Honours (Lower Division)

This was confirmed in a statement by the university’s Registrar, Mrs Olubunmi Faluyi, who said that Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, studied Classics.

The statement also revealed that the Governor gained admission to the university in 1976.
“Records of his admission and graduation are intact in the archives of the university.” the statement said.

You would recall that the All Progressive Congress, APC, had published details of Governor Obaseki and five other aspirants’ credentials, which showed that Obaseki had three credits in WASCE, a document that had been at the heart of controversies regarding his eligibility to secure a university admission, which required five credits.
