INEC Gets Federal High Court's Backing To Deregister Political Parties by Newsbreakers: 1:01pm On Jun 11, 2020
The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday supported INEC's decision to deregister 32 political parties. The parties had filed a suit against INEC to challenge the body's powers to deregister them. However, Justice Anwuli Chikere dismissed the suit filed by the parties against the Independent National Electoral Commission.

According to the judge, INEC made the decision based on the provision of section 225(a) of the Nigerian Constitution. INEC deregistered 74 political parties on February 6, 2020, citing their poor performance at the 2019 general elections.

When the parties found out about INEC's plans last year, they filed the suit to stop it in its tracks. On February 17, 2020, the judge issued a restraining order to prevent INEC's action. This decision was pending the determination of the suit by the court.
