WATCHMEN Season 1 Episode 4

Things Fall Apart is a very real novel in our world. The book that Cal is reading is considered one of the great canonical classics of African literature.

Things Fall Apart was written by Nigerian author China Achebe in 1958. It follows the life of an Igbo man named Okonkwo, and how his world is affected by the coming of British and Christian colonization. The title of last night’s episode, “If You Don’t Like My Story, Write Your Own,” is actually taken from a quote from the novel.

While fixing for an argument with Cal, Angela spoils the tragic ending of the novel, saying that Okonkwo hangs himself at the end rather than face a British trial over his choice to kill one of the invading white men. In the context of the book, this is devastating as suicide is an irrevocable sin in Igbo culture. So by defending his culture, Okonkwo has severed himself from it as well.

Considering this is Watchmen — and that we’ve already seen one hanging in the series — it may be worth examining the themes of Things Fall Apart. I mean, maybe it’s possible that Angela also spoiled something about the ending of Watchmen?

I saw that and was impressed. Nigerian culture and Nigerians are getting thrust into the forefront of the west.

Look at the cast, list of contributors in movies and TV shows, you'd almost always find a Nigerian name.
