African Parents, Stop Denying Your Children Of Their Africa Heritage. by Paypaylme(m): 1:08pm On Jun 20, 2020
To African parents, stop denying your children their african heritage. Stop giving your children names like Stephen Micheal, Promise Valentine, Perpetual Mary. They are not and will never be Caucasians or their sister race. Many African parents especially those that were not well enlightened are always found of giving their children foreign names alien to their own very existence. This same set of people abhors their children from speaking native language, they prefer the ill spoken foreign language to the sweet African language.
To the best of my knowledge, language is meant for communication and if that is the case, it is always wise to speak that which is common to you lieu of alien language. In Thailand, they have billboards telling you to appreciate their English because English people can't speak their own language.
Those children that you gave foreign names will one day realize who they are, ask questions and renounce post colonial slavery. Education comes with an enlightenment of it's own. Ofia Nwali from Ezza in Ebonyi State is one of the most educated man in the sub Sahara Africa. Ofia Nwali is the brain behind the ofia earpiece and many other tech Innovations. The Chinese respects him so much. But you know what, when Chief Ofia Nwali was alive, he does not reciprocate to English greetings, unless you don't know how to greet in Ezza or other Ebonyi language.
Yoruba is unarguably the most educated tribe in Nigeria and one of the most educated tribe in Africa. Hardly will you see a Yoruba man answering foreign name, hardly will you see two Yoruba professors speaking to each other in English. Is it that they don't know how to speak English? No! They produced one of the best English author in Africa, Dele Ashade, author of invisible teacher, and many other books in English. Do you know why it is like that, because with true education comes with true emancipation.
Ngugi was Thiongo is a notorious novelists with emphasis on political satire. Prof Ngugi writes all his books in native language and later translated to other languages because he believes that true freedom comes when you embrace your origin.
Ngugi wa Thiongo renounced his Christian name, James, Nmandi Azikiwe renounced his Christian name, Benjamin. Nmandi Azikiwe's father did not renounce his English, Obed because he was not exposed as his son. Very often, UNN students in the 90s use to insult Nmmadi Azikiwe by calling him Benjamin nwa (son) Obed.
In the last two years, I have seen many people give up their alien name. One of such people is Izuchukwu Ochenwari Eze, who renounced his Christian name Philip. Sir Phil as we use to know him is a popular political figure in student union government (movement). When he contested for speaker of the movement, we all know sir Phil not 'Ochenwari'. We were together in house of Rep, SUG, throughout those years, we only knew Sir Phil. He went there for a second time, he was still sir Phil. But something must have happened that made him come back to bear the name of his ancestors. He is Omoyele Sowere's right-hand man and a known political activist. Maybe his contact with the Yoruba made him do that. But that is his comment to make below. Many more people are renouncing their alien name because they have realized where they came from and who they are.
