As per research, it is found that in the United States, one in every eight hundred newborn babies is affected with a cleft lip or a cleft palate. Those parents of such kids have to go for orthodontics treatment at any point in life in order for 100% recovery.

What to do mean by cleft palate and cleft lips?
The condition in which newborn babies are born in which the roof of the mouth or palate fails to normally develop during the period of pregnancy, resulting in a cleft or opening that leads to the nasal cavity is known as cleft palate. Cleft palate may also involve the hard palate situated in the front part of the roof of the mouth or the soft palate located in the rear of the mouth. In may occur alone or maybe in conjunction with other facial as well as cranial birth defects such as cleft lips.

Cleft Lips is termed as one or more splits are there in the upper lips and it may vary from a small indentation in the lip known as an incomplete cleft to a split that may extend into one or more nostrils. Cleft lips are also said to form earlier in a baby’s development prior to its birth. One of the major causes of it is environmental exposures or genetic reasons of the mother during the pregnancy period.

Though cleft palate and lips are the most common birth defects, cleft lips are found to be more common in males.

How can it be corrected?
Top dental experts in California are highly experienced with a few orthodontic treatments that can be performed on the babies prior to surgery. Surgery may also be performed once the baby is between three to six months of age in order to correct the cleft lips. Additional surgeries may also be required depending on severity once the child grows.

On the other hand, surgery performed to correct cleft palate is known as palatoplasty. A child must be a minimum of eighteen months old for the surgery to be performed. Children with cleft palate sometimes result in extra, missing, or misshapen teeth and may further lead to cause breathing, eating as well as swallowing problems. Thus, it is highly advisable to visit a good orthodontist to prevent such dental and skeletal issues.

Last but not the least; you can also consult the best dental clinic in California since an experienced orthodontist is required. Otherwise, these surgeries if not performed properly can increase the dental problems once the adult tooth erupts or may also affect the upper jaw growth.
