Perry Groves believes majority of Arsenal fans could turn on Mikel Arteta if a new contract agreement is reached with David Luiz.

A decision on the Brazilian defender’s future is like to be reached this coming week, with his deal running out at the end of the month.

David Luiz, 33, appeared to have sealed his fate with a disastrous performance in Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat to Man City on Wednesday.

He made what could be referred to as double tragedy in mistakes which led to Raheem Sterling’s opener, another penalty and was subsequently shown a red card in a 25-minute cameo.

Gunners boss, Mikel Arteta defended his player after the match, but Groves, who won two league titles in a six-year spell from 1986 with Arsenal, insists Luiz is always going to make costly mistakes.

He said, “he’s 33 now and keeps making the same mistakes.

“He can play one brilliant game in six where you think what a player he is, pinging it 60, 70 yards, getting in front of the centre-forward and nicking it.

“But then another three or four of those games, he’ll make a ricket or he won’t concentrate.

“If Arteta signs David Luiz, Arteta will come under pressure from Arsenal fans.

“They will lose faith in Arteta because it’s blatantly obvious that he [Luiz] is always going to cause you problems.

“Arteta wants to play a back four, he wants to play a high line, he wants to play a pressing game and David Luiz can’t do that.”

Arsenal’s poor return to the season continued with a 2-1 defeat at relegation-threatened Brighton over the weekend.

Perry Groves believes Arsenal should wield the axe this summer to put an end to future mystery.

Perry Groves said: “I personally think until they get a team ethic in that club and that means everyone contributing – defenders contributing, midfielders and forwards – that club is going to stand still.

“There have got to be some huge decisions made by Arteta over senior members of his squad that he’s going to have to get out the door.

“Even if it makes them a slightly poorer side, he has to make big calls on certain players.”
