This is a Digital Elevation Model of a part of Lagos adjacent to the Ogun River flood pathway. Imagine having to study a DEM data of an area before making that important decision like 'where to develop a project' or 'an area to reside'.

This is important as it is no longer news that the Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority (OORDBA) - one of the 12 River Basin Development Authorities that manages the Oyan River Dam has stated that it will soon commence the seasonal water releases from the dam which is in addition to NiMet’s terrifying 2020 seasonal rainfall prediction.

According to Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority, 5 million cubic meters will be released in July, 8 to 10 million cubic meters will be released in August. In September, it will be increased to 18 million cubic meters, while in October, 23 million cubic meters will be released, which is the peak. Then by November, gradual reduction of water release to the tube will be 11 million cubic meters.

It is particularly important to know that Lagos is just few metres above sea level, prone to all kinds of natural, human and other meteorological causes of flooding.

As the State Government continues to work on all drainage channels in preparation for the flooding, residents living along the plains of Ogun River and other low-lying areas are advised to be on high alert and to also desist from human activities that impedes free flow of water.
