A member of the House of Representatives, Zakariya Dauda Nyampa, has advocated for fresh graduates to be enlisted into the army.

Nyampa who represents representing Michika/Madagali constituency of Adamawa state, said the military service should replace the mandatory one-year National Youth Services Corps (NYSC).

He said graduates who do not have the interest to serve as military personnel should be allowed to venture into other endeavours after the mandatory one-year training and service in the Nigerian army.

In as much as a reasonable number of Corps members don't like the NYSC scheme and want it scrapped, this is not a better solution.
It's like 'jumping from the frying pan to fire...'

Except if they would increase the pay reasonably, then the idea is welcomed...

Personally, I'd have preferred it. It will also increase the number of army reserves at any given time and give educated youth increased self-defense skills.

What was the reason of creating nysc ? To foster national unity.
You and I know that goal has failed woefully.

Compulsory one year military service? Nigeria claims to be learning from uk and USA,does either of those two counties practice compulsory one year military service? We both know the answer.

Some people will just talk, not because they have something to say BUT because they just want to talk.
So, after several years in university, the only thing that can come out of a lawmaker is for our graduate to be carrying guns abi even as a Medicine student? Wait Oooo...for what exactly?

This would be a very good idea, at least being in the military would guarantee their safety. NYSC keeps posting corpers to volitile regions thereby endangering their lives.

But if absorbed into the military for a compulsory one year service, they'll be safe cos they'll be based in the barracks and not some open lodge where rapists and thieves would keep paying them unannounced visit from time to time.

And of course the pay check would be bigger cos they're graduates.

I'm fully in support of this suggestion.
