The power of a single opportunity cannot be overemphasized. Many entrepreneurs and strikingly rich individuals have shared the secret of their wealth, and more than often, the big secret is hard work and an opportunity, no matter how little it might look. In my terms I call entrepreneurs “intelligent opportunists”. So is the devil.

The bible likened him to a roaring lion looking for whom to devour (1), more skilled than the most successful entrepreneur, he comes into a man’s life looking for an opportunity to ensnare him in the web of destruction. He is no respecter of persons or anointing, once he finds an opportunity he latches on it and does his dirty work.

This is why the bible says 2 Corinthians 2:11-Lest the devil should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. KJV

We can learn from the life of some bible personalities.

Abraham

Abraham, the father of faith and a friend of God, carried the seed of the promised child in his loins. The literal expression of the promised child was Isaac while the covenant expression was our Lord Jesus Christ. Despite Abraham's faith, the devil found an opportunity in his life. The opportunity was Hagar, the Egyptian woman, who was Sarah's hand maid. Sarah must have thought making Hagar Abraham's wife was a great idea (2), she didn't know that the seemingly innocent piece of advice was against God's plan hence the conclusion that that her adviser was the devil. The result of this decision to her and the world at large is enormous.

Samson

Samson’s case is a peculiar one, the tale of his weakness for strange women will be forever told.

Samson was a Nazarite from birth, his life was guided by a set of rules. He knew the what (that is, who he is and how he should live) but he did not know the why (that is, why he was who God made him to be). Samson had no sense of purpose which is probably why he gave himself to strange women. The devil saw this and robbed him of his divine destiny.

Samson’s destiny was to deliver the Israelite from the hand of the Philistines (3), he failed to fulfill this . King David had the opportunity to give testimonies of his victory against the Philistines because of Samson’s failure.

David

King David is the apple of God’s eyes. Despite his numerous exploits and his being an ancestor of the Lord Jesus Christ, his sexual affair with Bathsheba and killing of her husband Uriah scars his success record before heaven. David was supposed to be at battle but his carelessness and negligence of duty caused him to promote pleasures above responsibility. The devil, who is so skillful with his tactics took that opportunity to lure David to make the greatest mistake of his life. Till date, his descendants are still bearing the consequence (4).

We can see a common trend in the devil's attack on these individuals. He did not just attack to hurt them or make them regret their decisions, but to make mistakes which affected generations ahead of them and the world at large

As believers, we have nothing to fear. Still we need to be at alert, to watch and pray. Submit your will to His will and He will be your hope and stay.
