Alleges plot to compromise case by minister

Amaechi denies involvement, says count me out of Rivers APC palaver

A political and justice watchdog- Free People’s Social Club and Good leadership Initiative- has appealed to the President of the Court of Appeal (PCA), Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, to ensure that justice is allowed to take its natural course in the appeal over the leadership tussle in the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC).

The watchdog, in a petition to the PCA on ISAAC OGBOBULA V RT. HON. IGO AGUMA, ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS, AND OTHERS, alleged that a minister had set in motion machinery to “compromise and desperately upturn the case at the Appeal Court, Abuja”.

In contention is the judgement of a Rivers State High Court which affirmed Honourable Igo Aguma as APC chairman in the state, but which is now subject of appeal.

The watchdog alleged “a boastful plan by the minister to influence her Lordship to hurriedly upturn the judgement of the Rivers State High Court delivered by Hon. Justice George Omereji in Rt. Hon. Igo Aguma v All Progressives Congress & Othrs in SUIT N0. PHC/4355/2019 in favour of the appelant and this is quite curious.”

It added: “The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress in a letter has officially accepted the judgement of the Rivers State High Court and publicly stated that they do not intend to file an appeal against the judgement in Igo Aguma v All Progressives Congress.

”We are also aware as an organisation that the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress has issued an official letter to Rt. Hon. Igo Aguma recognizing him as the Acting Chairman of the APC in Rivers State.”

The group asked the PCA to “allow the Port Harcourt Division of the Court of Appeal to freely without any interference whatsoever entertain this appeal and do justice to it as the law prescribes.”

President of the group, Chima Samuel, and the Director of Administration, Issa Yusuf Mohammed, who signed the petition, said that since the appeal was filed in Port Harcourt, it should be allowed to be decided there.

I’m not involved in APC case, says Amaechi

Reacting on Friday, Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, denied the allegations against him and said the watchdog was only out to tarnish his image by alleging he has “a phantom interest in a court case involving the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State.”

The minister’s Media Office, warned in a statement yesterday, that no one should ”drag his name into any court matter involving the APC in Rivers or anywhere else as he is not involved in any APC court matter.”

The statement reads: “We are aware of plots by a group attempting to muddle the name of the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, by dragging him into an ongoing court case involving the All Progressives Congress, APC in Rivers State.

”The group has perfected plans to rubbish Amaechi’s image by falsely claiming that he (Amaechi) plans to influence the outcome of the said court matter.

”We want to clearly state that the honourable minister is not in court with anybody or any matter relating to the APC. He is in no way involved in any case whatsoever with the APC in Rivers or any other individual or entity in relation to the party.

”The individuals or group pushing this patently false, ill-conceived narrative about the honourable minister are by this statement warned to immediately desist from their evil plot. We are not unaware of their sponsors and paymasters. We will shame them publicly in due time if they don’t put a stop to their nefarious, ungodly, treacherous plans.

”Let us restate that the Honourable Minister, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, is not a defendant or respondent in any matter in court relating to the APC whether in Rivers State or anywhere else.”
