Dstv subs in Nigeria are the lowest in Africa.

They want to collect things for free without paying.

*DStv Compact costs N6,975 in Nigeria, equivalent to $15.50, while the same package costs 140GHS in Ghana, which is equivalent to $25.45.*

*In Kenya, DStv Compact costs KES 2,455, an equivalent of $24.55, while the same service goes for R359 ($21.11) in South Africa.*

*Also, in a financial report released by MultiChoice Group on Wednesday, South Africa has 43 per cent of its subscriber base and generates 66.35 per cent of its revenue, while Nigeria generates 10.89 per cent.*

*It further showed that a profit of $617.69 million was generated in South Africa with a trading margin of 30 per cent, while Nigeria did $329 million, 100 per cent less than what was realised in South Africa.*

There's more to DStv than sports. More people subscribe to watch Big Brother than any sport channel in Nigeria. More people even subscribe to watch The Johnsons and Basketmouth's My Flatmates

Don't mistake viewing centre addicts for genuine DStv subscribers. DStv will run at a loss if the management expects individual subscribers to cough out 15k monthly to watch Supersports.

The point am making is if you take sport away the viewers will reduce by half. Those programmes you mentioned came to dstv because of the viewers. The reality show is a one off thing although I understand your point but at least it will affect them small.

What kind of lie is this? grin

Nigerians destroyed Nigerian football, that's why so many Nigerian players and players with Nigerian parents are playing for European countries and teams and not here.

Nigerian football has had the issue of 'not enough money/investment.

As an example, some years ago, Glo , when it was sponsoring the league, spent N500million on the league in one year. Meanwhile revenues for the EPL clubs in 2010/11 was 2.3 billion pounds sterling.

Also, EPL clubs charge high ticket prices. The cheapest ticket at the Emirates stadium , London is 25 pounds sterling. That's far more than what someone would charge in Nigeria for local stadium VIP side self.(Eyimba tickets at their stadium 2 years ago, were between N500-1500).

Nigerian players definetly will go where the money is.

It'd be logical to think access to internet should influence the ability and frequency of typical Nigerian youth to research online. But the case for reasons I do not know is the opposite. Nigerians do not only pay less south africans to access DSTV services. They pay the least in africa

Nigeria pays the least for sub with DStv. And dstv has over 60% active subscriber base in south africa, with nigeria over 10%.
The profit margins shows nigeria with it's more population generates 100% less of revenue compared to RSA.
This our federal government is just looking for who to blame for their inefficiency, ask yourself if you pay DStv sub and have light 24hrs would you complain? It's a business not charity if you can't afford it or think it's too expensive go and use startimes and complain about picture quality.
How will I use my money and buy something then you come and force me to share the rights i bought with people who can't pay me.

Imagine DStv giving startimes and NTA rights to their epl and champions league matches.
Will you watch champions league or epl on startimes or NTA?

Don't rule out this Govt. Nigerians are very cunny and good at looking for loopholes to circumvent the system.

Don't be surprised that there is a company waiting on standby that will buy this rights exclusively from the producers directly and sell to Dstv, Startimes and Kwese Tv.

Imagine if the rights total about $500millon, that would mean about $150million from each paytv right? You may laugh it off and say that DStv can simply afford it and still maintain the largest market share but don't celebrate yet. Due to our corrupt practices, d Nigerian promoted company (in this case Startimes) would then go ahead to drastically reduce prices drawing customers to them and making it difficult for the likes of DStv to compete.

Mind you, them reducing their prices is because they know if Startimes is unable to pay their share of $150million they can easily put their hands in the cookie jar by writing a memo to CBN of course backed by the powers that be, that way they get to amass so much without no accountability and those bribes DStv refused to pay or where paying would then look like chicken change grin

I have seen this a lot of times, I tell u d average Nigerian is corrupt, and some Nationals like d Chinese don't mind to roll in dirty waters.

This attempt to break Dstv's monopoly is a smoke screen to get to the cookie jar, that's all. Don't forget, OBJs Govt gave Hitv the legal framework to operate and left their hands out of it, if it were today, corrupt officials would have found a way to keep it afloat using Govt funds.

Don't forget the recent story with Polaris Bank and d Funta's grin

Nigeria is irredeemable, it's sinks depper everyday and stinks to d heavens cry

Lol. Everyone calm down.

In 2003 when Govt set out to first break the monopoly of DStv, it requested that d EPL excludes Nigeria from the rest of Africa and treat Nigeria as a continent or a separate entity from the rest of Africa so as to give the then up and coming Hitv a platform to wrestle feathers with DStv.

This meant that DStv had to pay first for exclusive rights for EPL in Africa then struggle or battle with Hitv for d rights of Nigeria. After Hitv collapsed, DStv had unfiltered access to the Nigeria rights.

Now, with the rising cost of the dollar, Dstv cannot keep up with that model of paying twice for a service and had to increase d price of their bouquet.

Despite this, Govt is still trying to break their back and they (DStv) are beginning to think it's best for them to pull out of the EPL Nigeria market.

The cost of getting this right is about $350million, the question is can the present Nigerian market easily generate this sum?

Me thinks the Govt is trying to promote a company somewhere, more like the hands of Esau but the voice of Jacob.

Truth is: the Nigerian market cannot afford the cost except there is an increase in the price of subscriptions, something Multichoice wants to do. The problem is that Nigerians have become poorer over the years and her currency has lost enormous value within the same period. Which is why any organisation that decides to offer the same service would have to increase prices to breakeven or Nigerians should expect the worst of services. Nevertheless, I really pray, hope and wish that Multichoice refuses to purchase the new rights to the Premier League so that cretinous Nigerians will suffer for their profound foolishness!

I am pretty sure you have good understnding of the indices that determine business fortune.

Subscription price is just one of them.

So of these all African countries, which of them has the monopolistic Nigerian market size that has been enjoyed by the multichoice brand a good number of year.

Now you want to be ingrate to Nigerian government has allowed you to enjoy super profit even at the detriment of Nigerian companies such hitv among others

Well, if we had a group of Nigerian investors who were willing to invest in a cable company that could compete with DSTV and startimes and offered good content, things might be diffeerent.

But Nigeria's money men and women are scared of television. It sucks money (to them). Only passionate folks like Dokpesi and Momoh are into tv...and even then...

Good content costs money, something Nigerians cannot afford. Nigerians are notoriously poor. More brand new cars were sold in South Africa than Nigeria even though the latter has three times the population of the former.

Entirely false. Nigeria has the highest number of poor people in the world! That's a fact! The lie that the vast majority of Nigerians love football to the extend of leaving Multichoice should they let go of the EPL didn't happen when HITV got the viewing rights to air the EPL. People still stuck with Multichoice. There's more to DSTV than football. Nigeria doesn't have the financial resources to pay commensurate subscriptions for a right worth almost half a billion dollars! Cable TV is not an essential commodity!

Lol... It's hilarious how naive some people are, even at this point in time. Companies come up with several claims and skewed statistics every now and then. Sadly, people are quick to hop on the bandwagon without verifying such claims. An independent research on DStv plans and prices across Africa is all one needs to unravel the truth.

“Send multichoice packing and see how naija go do am much better” you made me laugh with this statement of yours. Tell me one service that is ran by Nigerians today for which Nigerians are getting good and proportionate value? Is it your banks? Is it PHCN? Is it your airports? Is it your schools? Is it your internet service providers? Is it even your government as a whole?? Take it or leave it, service delivery in Nigeria is very terrible. Back to the matter, your Abuja politicians are evidently ignorant of how TV rights work globally. The contents being showed on cable TV are bought from TV companies Worldwide for millions of dollars. For e.g, Multichoice pays sky sport about 250 million USD to broadcast EPL and this is in addition to the 100million Euros to broadcast UEFA champs league. In light of the embarrassing depreciation of the naira against international currencies, it is only fair that Multichoice increases their tariff to make reasonable profits. Multichoice is not a charity organization, it is a business entity. Let the Abuja politicians focus their energy on stabilizing the economy, stabilizing by the capital market, improving the earning power of ordinary Nigerians and providing good business environment for investors, rather than chasing shadows. If at all anything, Multichoice should be commended for providing a wide range of flexible plans to match customers financial strength. As for the many Nigerians supporting the Abuja politicians to fight multichoice, I shake my head for you. Instead of you to channel your energy into holding your leaders accountable and demanding for a better Nigeria, you are instead making noise over multichoice that never forced itself on anyone. If anyone thinks he/she is being ripped off, then he/she should quit subscribing. After all, cable TV is far from being a necessity of life.

We aren't even sustaining the business as Multichoice is generating a loss because she wants to satisfy the needs of notorious people who are irredeemably poor. She should let go of the EPL and Champions League let me see which company will purchase viewing rights of close to half a billion dollars and air them below market prices.
