I had also wondered why Zik and Awo could not form government and I recently found the reason.
Britain was the reason Zik didn't form government with Awo.As the independence was coming, the British knew that Zik and Awo could not be manipulated because they still wanted to pull the strings on Nigeria after independence. British knew that Zik collected some loan from eastern marketing board which he never paid back. The British first of all manipulated the census in favour of the North because they knew the importance to democracy. They rigged the elections before the result came out. They also knew that the North could not handle Nigeria due to the lack of the quality of education of Zik and Awo, so balewa needed to be paired with one of the two. British knew that Awo was more principled than Zik, they therefore picked Zik and forced him to take less powerful position of governor General when Zik was made to understand that he would be jailed because of the loan corruption. Zik has no choice than to capitulate.

Nnamdi Azikiwe was blackmailed by the British. They always wanted the North to come ahead believing that it’d be easier to monitor the new nation through their favorite 'yessiree men'.
They were afraid that an alliance between the East & West would birth a nation that they couldn’t control.
One in which the fake population and alarming illiteracy in the North would see them perpetually dominated by a Southern led govt of intellectuals and freethinkers.
See for your self...

Keep defending selfish Azikuwe that put Igbo in one Nigeria of no return. Now when SW align with the north they call them slave when they wish to be in the SW position desperately. Ibo are the epitome of hypocracy
