Facing a groundswell of public outcry over a Chairman of anti corruption agency swimming in corruption, the Senate is set to unveil competing proposals to tackle the issue, THE NIGERIA DAILY reports.

A prominent senator from the north revealed that the government is embarrassed by the level of weighty allegations against the acting Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC) which led to his suspension by President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday.

To support and address systemic corruption and excessive use of force in the economic and financial Crimes enforcement, THE NIGERIA DAILY was told that both the ruling and opposition parties of All Progressives Congress (APC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have jointly agreed to propose a bill that would prevent police officers from heading any anti corruption agency in Nigeria.

The two bills, one drafted by APC senators and the other, PDP senators share some common ground: both call for reform on the appointment of chairman of anti corruption agencies , professional investigations on allegations before raids , more training for law enforcement officials and incentives for law enforcement officers to wear body cameras. The bills would also make media trial a crime.

The source also added that the Senate want anti corruption agencies headed by reputable individuals from the judiciary and private sectors. It added that aside its headship , police officers are allowed to work as members of the organization.

How about the other issues that needs some better law such as the punitive measures for such crimes? The EFCC by-laws punishment is too mild and endorses stealing.
