The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered 54.9 million prospective voters nationwide – as of last Monday. Its projection is that the number of would-be voters will exceed 62 million by the close of the exercise tomorrow.

INEC chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega’s spokesman Kayode Idowu, who gave the figure in a statement yesterday, said the registration was going on as projected.

"About 54.9 million people had been registered nationwide as at Monday, January 31, 2010 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the on-going voter registration exercise.

"With barely two days to the end of the seven-day extension, the daily average nationwide has lowered to 3.2million, as against about 4.3million per day a week earlier. It is expected that the daily average will decline even furthermore as people get registered.

"Going by the present level and pace of registration, it is projected that no fewer than 62million people will be registered by the close of the registration on Saturday, February 5, 2010," Idowu said.

He, however, did not release the state-by-state breakdown.

In Enugu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Josiah Uwazuruonye, announced that no fewer than one million eligible voters had been registered.

Dr Uwazuruonye told NAN on Wednesday that the commission was ready to register even more people to ensure a credible register.

Uwazuruonye said the commission spent a lot of money trying to make the registration successful and would do more if need be.

"We supply about 30 packets of ink to each of the 17 local government areas daily.

"Nigeria is a country where many people complain of one thing or the other, but we will ensure that people do not lay a lot of complaints by providing materials to every centre," he said.

The voter registration suffered another hitch yesterday in Lagos, following the shortage of ink and ECIA forms used in printing cards.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the areas affected by the shortage include the densely populated Alimoso, Ayobo-Ipaja and Oke-Odo council areas.

The ECIA form is used for manual registration of eligible voters while the ink is used for thumb printing before registered voters are issued with their cards.

A corps member, Mr Emmanuel Samuel, told NAN that INEC only provided five copies of the ECIA forms at the centre for the additional one week for the exercise, which he described as inadequate.

"What this means is that we are not able to give out the temporary voter cards to people that we have registered.

"We are now doing it on a first come, first served basis because we still have over 200 people who have been duly registered but they will not be able to collect their cards because of this problem,’’ he said.

Prince Bisi Yusuf, Chairman, Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area, said the hitches had not been fully addressed in the area, saying only 35 per cent of eligible voters in the area had been registered.

"The shortage of materials has hampered the registration in this area. We have provided inks to some of the centres, but we cannot provide the ECIA forms," he said.

In Abuja, the problems associated with the slow processing capacities of Direct Data Capture machines have refused to go away. Housewives, youths and other prospective voters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) now do vigil at registration centres.

Prospective voters go to registration centres in their area at midnight, to begin registering their names in notebooks or sheets of paper that registration officials use to allot serial numbers between 8 and 9a.m., shortly before registration begins.

The number given by the officials determines the placement of those queuing to register while those who fail to arrive in time lose their chance.

The practice is common at registration centres in Wuse and Garki areas within the city and in satellite towns, such as Lugbe and Kubwa.

excuse me. Why is this questionable?

You have "valid" facts?
Re: Questionable - Inec Registers 54 by lagerwhenindoubt(m): 10:36am On Feb 04, 2011
I think it is questionable going by the fact that:

1: INEC had logistics challenges distributing DDC machines to various designated centers
2: INEC had technical difficulties that cut into the allocated time requested for the registration exercise (this was blamed on poorly trained corpers, then software, then thugs who stole machines)

I think if you go by the numbers published (54.9 million in 17 days) and not take out the early 1 week INEC had troubles with the DDC, you will come up with a figure of 3.14 million Nigerians daily. It may be a simple calculation but you may also want to consider that there may be days where they could have registered more than 3.14 million Nigerians (perhaps 5 million) is this possible?

I am a card-carrying member of the PDP and also registered voters in 2002 Gerrard Booth, Ikoyi. I can tell you in the entire ETI-OSA LGA we did not turn in numbers higher than 150 per day even with the threat of arrests for non-registration and the mammoth crowd that came for the exercise.

The machines used were similar and the time spent registering a person is still the same (It takes more time now than before when it was 5-10 minutes per person)

I just doubt the figures that's all. INEC is targeting 60 million voters out of 150 million Nigerians are you not curious? If 60 million voters can come out to perform their civic duties; that is 29% of Nigeria that share the same vision. I just doubt that is the case?

In the Court of Public Opinion YES  cool but you see I assume that is no concern of INEC (or most non-voting Nigerians) who see it fit to declare one winner today on the basis of the voters registrar and factual count of votes only to be over-turned by the courts for voting irregularities. It is such irregularities I find questionable here.

everything points to doubt without any concrete evidence as is usual in Nigeria.

I take it you are referring to Conjectures and Speculations in this case it is simply an OBSERVATION and IMHO there is great value in EVIDENCE when you have the full benefit of Time, Resources and Control of a situation or environment. just like in a Science Lab. let me give you an example. in space phenomena, there are such things as "Blackholes" they cannot and have not been seen but we know they exists based on the effect they have on their surroundings. This is the same argument here, A lot of Nigerians will say with confidence that OBJ is corrupt but there is not one bit of concrete evidence to prove it, however we can see numerous million dollar projects and expenditure that have literally withered-away with very little evidence that such huge sums were expended on them. will you say that because you do not have evidence that OBJ embezzled monies, you cannot look at the collateral evidence of his activities and make a point of observation? haba, that is very rigid reasoning. If we cannot look at early warning signs that forth-coming elections may be distorted and take early measures ahead of time. We will simply end up with duly Elected Leaders whom we end up fighting till the end of their tenure or the until the courts overturn their election. sad countless of voting Nigerians would have suffered not only electoral injustice but also unneeded economic disfranchisement that this crooked leader will bring.

I guess the machine found in Mr. Clerk house, the one in Anambra Forest and other alike were registering more than others - to makeup for the limitations of the ones the public had.

Re: Questionable - Inec Registers 54 by 1025: 1:31pm On Feb 04, 2011
the number is even small. how many ddc machines missed before and during the excise? how many were found in edwin clark's house and how many were not found? do you think those machines will come back empty?
